Job Description:

As the primary provider of all-inclusive histology and histopathology services at Brown University, the Molecular Pathology Core (MPC) is responsible for tissue processing and staining services for biomedical researchers both internal and external to Brown University. The Research Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining samples for sophisticated analysis using primarily light microscopy. The Research Assistant will also assist in selecting and optimizing protocols for both routine and non-routine samples. The Research Assistant will report daily to the Senior Research Assistant and assist with all issues related to the operational management of the core, including such aspects as maintaining equipment and assisting with adherence to all safety precautions. The Research Assistant will also maintain core user databases, track publications involving the core, and maintain billing records for services rendered. Responsibilities of the position are listed below:

  • Sample Processing: Assist with sample processing including prepare, process, embed, section, and stain histological research samples accurately and precisely to provide reliable products for data acquisition. Staining will be primarily hematoxylin & eosin (H&E), although the MPC also provides additional or alternative staining with specials (Congo Red, Masson's Trichrome, Sirius Red, Periodic Acid Schiff [PAS], etc.) Complementation of these techniques with immunostaining in which antibodies are used to detect antigens and or cells, is another technique that the research assistant will assist with.
  • Experiment Optimization: Optimize, organize, and execute experiments using a variety of histological, histochemical, and immunolabeling techniques for sophisticated analysis using light and electron microscopy.
  • Research Support: Assist senior personnel with client training regarding the safe and proper use of core equipment, the safe handling of chemicals, and effective research experimental design that maximizes the capabilities of the core.
  • Financial Responsibilities: Assist in the management of core budgetary expenditures and monitor spending trends. Maintain a core user calendar system and database and billing records for services rendered.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field with prior related experience or extensive coursework, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred: Histotechnician (HT) accreditation through an ASCP accredited program
  • Preferred: Experience in histotechnology, experience in immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and a variety of microscopy techniques.
