The Clinical Pharmacy Specialists work to support the vision of the Department of Pharmacy which is “Optimizing patient outcomes through integrated delivery of quality pharmaceutical care" and the mission of the institution. Activities include providing consultation for other health care providers, educating patients and other health care providers, reviewing and processing medication orders, and preparing and dispensing medication.
Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is a 763-bed academic medical center affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. As an academic facility with a Level I trauma center, this tertiary care institution has numerous post-graduate training programs, including multiple medical and surgical residencies and fellowships.
The Critical Care Clinical Specialist provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care to critically ill adult patients in the medical intensive care unit to assure safe and effective drug therapy. The Critical Care Clinical Specialist will develop and maintain a clinical practice by participating in clinical rounds in adult ICU patient care areas. Activities include collaborating with members of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine to develop policies and protocols that provide effective and efficient use of medications, providing consultation for other health care providers, educating patients and other health care providers, and reviewing and processing medication orders. This position would also include relevant commitment representation, staff education, and precepting pharmacy students. This position would be directly involved in precepting PGY1 pharmacy residents and PGY2 critical care and internal medicine pharmacy residents.
Qualified candidates must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and must possess a current Virginia pharmacist license or be eligible for licensure. An ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is required and specialized PGY2 residency training in Critical Care is preferred. Applicants must possess excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills, as well as demonstrate advanced skills in critical thinking and analysis. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision.
