As a Lead Nurse, you will serve as the statewide clinical expert and offer support and guidance to area Nurses. This role provides leadership, coordination, and support to school-based nurses to ensure high-quality, consistent, and compliant health care for all students. The Lead Nurse collaborates with state leadership to develop health-related policies, procedures, and training. The Lead Nurse also supports the instructional program by creating a climate of health and well-being in a school by addressing the health needs of the one designated school consistent with the goals set forth by CSUSA. while also serving as the Nurse for a specific school.

How You Will Impact Education

Leadership and oversight

  • Provide clinical oversight to school nurses across the state.
  • Coordinate and monitor delivery of health services to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
  • Work collaboratively with school leadership to address work related issues and/or concerns.
  • Evaluate and standardize school nursing practices across all campuses.
  • Maintains a complete, up-to-date health record system using available technology.
  • Plans and conducts screenings, examinations, and health appraisals in accordance with state law and CSUSA policy.
  • Monitors newly enrolled students in order to ensure that state law and district policy are implemented concerning health issues (i.e., immunization, medical records

Health Service Management

  • Develop, implement, and maintain health policies, procedures, and protocols for the state.
  • Assist statewide Nurses to develop, implement, and maintain health policies, procedures and protocols on their campus.
  • Monitor communicable diseases and implement public health interventions as needed.
  • Ensure that all student health records are accurate, secure, and up-to-date.
  • Manage the district's medication administration and emergency care protocols.
  • Facilitate trainings in the use of new medical equipment, AED usage and CPR for staff.
  • Train statewide nurses on the use of the electronic management system.

 

Professional Development and Training

  • Provide onboarding, mentorship, and ongoing training for school nurses.
  • Organize statewide professional development related to student health and wellness.
  • Serve as a resource and consultant to staff on health-related issues.
  • Maintain all necessary state certifications.
  • Maintain current CPR certification.

 

Collaboration and Communication

  • Act as the primary point of contact for local and state health departments.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, and special education staff to support students with complex medical needs.
  • Communicate effectively with families regarding student health concerns and plans of care.
  • Advises and counsels students, staff, and parents, as appropriate, concerning health issues.
  • Makes referrals to school resources and/or community agencies as necessary.
  • Serves as consultant and resource person in health instruction and curriculum planning.
  • Provides input to the administration concerning the implementation of state law and the development of CSUSA policies and procedures related to health issues.
  • Remain available in person or virtual to campus nurses.
  • Create a schedule to visit nurses quarterly.

 

Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with state immunization laws and health screenings.
  • Maintain records and submit required reports to state and federal agencies.
  • Oversee documentation and reporting related to student accidents, health incidents, and mandated reporting requirements.

Emergency Care

  • Provides first aid as needed.
  • Assists emergency care givers as applicable.
  • Maintains appropriate records as required.

Job Requirements

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of North Carolina
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 2 years in a school or pediatric setting
  • Current CPR/AED certification
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (for travel between schools)

Preferred:

  • School Nurse Certification (if required or offered by the state)
  • Experience in supervision or staff leadership
  • Knowledge of FERPA, HIPAA, and public health regulations applicable to school settings.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
