Are you a highly skilled communications professional who wants to make a difference in our community?

We are looking for a Communications Advisor to join the Community Services Communications and Engagement team. This position will focus on providing strategic communications and marketing services to the Affordable Housing and Homelessness portfolio in the Community Services department.

The Community Services Department is committed to creating a safe, healthy and vibrant city. Affordable Housing and Homelessness leads coordinated action with partners to anticipate, recognize and respond to affordable housing and homelessness needs. These efforts improve the quality of life for individuals and families by increasing, maintaining and supporting safe, adequate and affordable housing in all areas of the city; and improving access to critical support services for those experiencing homelessness.

The Communications Advisor in this position will develop and implement communications and marketing strategies to raise awareness of the benefits of putting safe, clean, affordable housing within reach of more people in more neighbourhoods and providing communications support throughout that process. (Please note that assigned portfolios can change over time.) In all aspects of your work you will exemplify the City of Edmonton's cultural commitments of Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, inspiring an environment for others to do the same.

Duties include:

  • Lead, develop, manage and implement integrated communication plans and marketing strategies and tactics for both external and internal audiences
  • Identify emerging issues and provide timely advice and effective strategies in response to those issues
  • Manage media relations, including organizing media events, coaching spokespeople and sometimes serving as a spokesperson
  • Review Council reports, develop consistent messaging, liaise with counterparts in other orders of government or community
  • Lead and support marketing, engagement and education initiatives as well as responses to resident inquiries
  • Create engaging copy and visuals to be used for social media channels (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to advance department goals
  • Provide communications support to public engagement initiatives
  • Write news releases, public service announcements, media advisories, brochures, newsletters and other communication products
  • Edit, develop and update web and 311 content for programs, projects and initiatives
  • Work with clients, designers, printers, vendors and marketing agencies to create effective communications and advertising products
  • Perform other related duties as required
