This unique position functions as a Crew Leader during the prime sports field season (approximately April 15 - October 31) and transitions to a Labourer II for snow removal and maintenance during the winter months (approximately November 1 - April 14). As a Crew Leader, you will provide field-level supervision and hands-on leadership to crews responsible for sports field maintenance, organizing resources and ensuring programs meet established standards. In the Labourer II role, you will be crucial in supporting active pathway snow removal, ensuring public access and safety. This role requires adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety and quality in all tasks.

What will you do?

As Crew Leader (approx. April 15 - October 31):

  • Provide hands-on supervision and leadership to deliver approved work plans for sports field maintenance
  • Set daily priorities and ensure appropriate crew and equipment are utilized for programs, meeting standards outlined in the Green Book
  • Ensure all employees are properly trained and work adheres to established safety policies and procedures
  • Forecast needs based on team talent and skills, and provide training on various equipment uses and functions
  • Exemplify and enable Cultural Commitments (Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated, Excellent) and respectful workplace practices
  • Review, enter, and approve payroll, ensuring timeliness and accuracy
  • Assist in job interviews and conduct seasonal evaluations of staff
  • Provide continuous coaching, feedback, mentorship, and guidance to staff
  • Provide orientation and ongoing training to ensure staff are aware of policies and procedures
  • Maintain records, monitor staff certifications, create worksite logs, and report on completed work and variances
  • Ensure all City of Edmonton Occupational Health and Safety Standards and Enviso policies and procedures are followed and enforced

As Labourer II (approx. November 1 - April 14):

  • Perform manual labor for the Snow and Ice Program, including operating powered equipment (e.g., John Deere 72" with broom, toolcat, MT), shoveling, and maintaining a variety of inventory for public access
  • Adhere to standard operating procedures, environmental, and safety programs, and conduct daily Field Level Risk Assessments
  • Inspect and document all equipment for safety before use
  • Provide professional and respectful customer service and communicate with the public and other employees
  • Be available for potential 24/7 coverage
