Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief of Fire Rescue Operations and Training will be responsible for strategizing and overseeing fire rescue services delivery to over 1M Edmontonians while fostering a working culture of innovation, engagement, collaboration and respect. The Deputy Fire Chief is a senior executive position and an essential competency is an ability to build relationships and a belief that diversity of ideas, experiences and approaches is key to building the safest and most effective service for EFRS and the public it serves.

What will you do?

  • Strategically lead Fire Rescue Operations and ensure front line services and operations are delivered effectively and aligned with the vision of the Fire Chief and the City of Edmonton
  • Oversee the risk management of Fire Suppression Event Response, Medical Event Response, Rescue Event Response, Hazardous Materials Event Response, Regional Mutual Aid Response and Specialty Operations
  • Oversee training design and delivery for the Fire Service
  • Develop long-term strategies for Fire Rescue Operations including identifying key performance indicators to measure success
  • Lead and collaborate with section Assistant Deputy Chiefs in ensuring the development and successful implementation of short-term strategies and day-to-day operational programs in Fire Rescue Operations consistent with long-range objectives
  • Collaborate with the Deputy Fire Chief of Community Safety & Risk and the Deputy Fire Chief of Administration to support the Fire Chief in the design and implementation of the strategic direction for EFRS as a whole
  • Lead and manage change, build organizational talent and capacity, and achieve organizational outcomes
  • Provide excellent leadership through: development and coaching, performance evaluation and feedback, health and wellness, safety, recruitment and succession planning
  • Liaise with other leaders within EFRS and the City and external agencies to facilitate collaborative relationships
  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationships with all EFRS staff and relevant bargaining agent staff to foster effective problem solving and innovation 
  • Budget planning and reporting; including analyzing, interpreting and developing financial reports and annual budget for Fire Rescue Operations
  • Keep current with advances in business practices, technology and technical information to ensure the best value for services is delivered. Collaborate and liaise with partners
