1 temporary full-time position for 8 months intended specifically for students currently enrolled in co-op or equivalent post-secondary work experience degree program, commencing in September 2024

The City of Edmonton is looking for a motivated student who will engage residents and help them get composting at home and keep composting. If you are passionate about sustainability and helping others; this role is for you.

In this role, you will talk to people of all ages and backgrounds. You will share interesting info about home composting, Edmonton's waste system, and how to reduce waste. You will present, lead, and teach about building healthy soil, composting, recycling, and disposal. You will learn and apply techniques to influence others and help them change behaviours. Your work will include getting physical and composting at interpretive sites, organizing and hosting workshops, planning and coordinating events, measuring performance, and doing analysis. Every day is different and exciting.

As a core part of the team, you will:

  • Learn all the details about Edmonton's waste system, home composting, and reducing waste
  • Share and engage with Edmontonians to change their waste behaviours
  • Educate residents about the science of composting and how to compost with many different methods and different settings
  • Engage and teach various audiences, with individuals or small groups
  • Maintain demonstration sites around Edmonton, such as compost piles, growing plants, some gardening, and self-directed tasks
  • Support volunteers in the Master Composter Recycler Program
  • Plan, coordinate, and host events at Compost School and other events
  • Ensuring these are engaging, effective, and always improving
  • Draft, edit, and publish content with social media, newsletters, web pages, etc.
  • Assist staff in other areas of waste programming as needed

    • Respond to direct inquiries, in person, groups, online
    • Conduct outreach & canvassing
    • Plan events
