Reporting to the Natural Areas Ecologist, the Natural Areas Field Technician will play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological health of our natural spaces and ensuring compliance with the City of Edmonton's environmental standards. This role requires effective management of tasks and time, along with strong communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders.
In this role, you can expect to:
- Conduct bird nest walk-through and sweeps, wildlife surveys and breeding bird surveys in various landscapes
- Identify active nest sites currently being used by wildlife and implement setbacks
- Complete nest buffer monitoring and nest checks as required
- Collect data in the field with GIS Software, including wildlife features, species and nest sweep data, and other ecological attributes
- Work with the Wildlife Technicians to confirm timing and priority of sites requiring assessment
- Communicate with stakeholders to ensure efficient and effective nest sweeps
- Conduct ecological and restoration monitoring and share recommendations Set up and monitor wildlife cameras, as well as manage the camera data
- Conduct field inspections and assess the progress and completion of contracted work
- Ensure compliance with safety and ENVISO requirements
- Research into best practices and work to minimize the overall disturbance footprint for wildlife
- Respond to public complaints or inquiries, orally or in writing
- Assist with creating educational and engaging content for social media posts
- Perform other related work, as required
