Reporting to the Director of Media Relations and Public Affairs, the Supervisor's major responsibilities include:
- Provide sound advice, direction, and support to senior management and other supervisory staff in the areas of public and media relations, issues management, crisis communications, and internal communications.
- Assist in developing, implementing, and measuring communication strategies that align EPS' strategic goals and address the short-term and long-term needs of the Service.
- Manage the flow of information to the public, media, and other stakeholders, ensuring accuracy, timeliness and adherence to internal policies and procedures.
- Coordinate and facilitate media training for organizational spokespeople, senior management, and other staff to ensure they are comfortable engaging with media.
- Plan and facilitate media events such as press conferences, media availabilities, and interviews, with multiple partners.
- Maintain and develop key relationships with internal and external stakeholders, such as the Edmonton Police Commission and the City of Edmonton.
- Proactively identify and monitor issues and current events that may impact the Service, developing related strategies.
- Draft a variety of documents and messaging, including but not limited to responses to media inquiries, news releases, statements, speaking notes, backgrounders, FAQs, social media, briefing notes/packages, ad copy, etc.
- Collaborate with other unit areas within the External Relations Division to ensure an integrated approach to organizational communication activities.
- Act as an organizational spokesperson when required.
- Participate in the Media Relations Unit standby rotation, which includes work during the evenings and weekends.
- Provide supervision, mentorship, and leadership to a team of approximately four (4) full-time staff, with specific staffing complement and assignments to be determined between the Director and the successful candidate.
- University graduation in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position with at least two (2) years' communications experience in a similar organization, as well as one (1) year of experience in a related supervisory capacity. OR Diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of six (6) years progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position with at least two (2) years' supervisory communications experience in a similar organization, as well as one (1) year of experience in a related supervisory capacity.
- Proven exceptional interpersonal, coaching, negotiation, and consultation skills is a requirement.
- Experience in providing communication advice to senior management, specifically in areas of emergency and issues management, crisis communication and public relations.
- Demonstrates alignment with organizational values and established leadership competencies.
- Strong understanding of current and historic events, including policing issues, to identify emerging trends that may impact the EPS.
- Strong understanding of social media platforms and their audiences, including Instagram, Facebook, X and TikTok.
- Superior knowledge of communications and media relations' best practices in law enforcement, with strong political acumen.
- Ability to work under tight timelines, in emergent situations with evolving priorities.
Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, Monday – Friday between 0800 - 1600. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work program. This position is required to work as part of the Media Relations Unit standby rotation on evenings and weekends.
Salary Range: 21M, Salary Grade: 045 $52.41 - $65.87 (Hourly), $3,537.90 - $4,446.30 (Bi-Weekly), $92,340.36 - $116,048.23 (Annually).
The rates quoted are in accordance with a Collective Agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.
