The Youth Services Section of the Edmonton Police Service requires a Youth Programs Coordinator to coordinate the delivery of youth serving programs that EPS either leads or participates in as a formal partner. Currently this includes a high-risk youth mentorship program (MAGS). The Youth Programs Coordinator will act as a broker, advocate and link to a diverse set of youth partners (community & justice) who place a high priority on tailored approaches to meet the needs of high risk youth facing complex realities. The Youth Programs Coordinator will oversee the MAGS initiative and actively look to develop new strategies as youth crime trends emerge. This is not considered a front line position. Occassional direct contact with youth will occur for the purposes of obtaining initial consent and to explain program parameters however the majority of the role will be in an administrative oversight and coordination capacity.
The Youth Programs Coordinator, in consultation with the leadership team will create strategic planning to best support the needs of justice involved youth with effective programming. The position will be responsible for developing and maintaining strong collaborative partnerships externally and across all areas of the organization. Key responsibilities will include:
- Lead the development and implementation of the Mentorship & Gang Solutions (MAGS) initiative, based on the roles and responsibilites as agreed upon by the EPS.
- Build strong partnerships in order to sustain effective gang intervention efforts (community and government organizations).
- Ensure youth initiatives and programs are and remain aligned to EPS Young People Strategy, the Government of Alberta's Guns and Gangs Violence Action Fund (GGVAF) intiative, the City of Edmontons Building Safer Communities Fund (BSCF) initiative and is dedicated to reducing the frequency and severity of offending and victimization of young people.
- Participate in conversations and relationship building with a variety of community partners in order to sustain core intervention strategies and proven initiatives.
- Act as a liaison with Justice partners regarding updates for program youth.
- Review and approve all program referrals.
- Co-supervise and provide daily operational oversight for the MAGS mentor team lead and ~ 7 mentors (in partnership with their employing agency).
- Supervise a Recreation Officer I position which would operate in a supporting role to this position.
- Ensure consistent service and coordinated approach within youth focused partnerships that EPS leads or participates in.
- Develop and sustain both informal and formal collaborative arrangements with a wide variety of youth serving agencies in order to provide effective treatment and rehabilitative opportunities for high-risk young people.
- Maintain accurate data collection in order to properly track and then assess youth intervention programs and efforts.
- Report on positive outcomes and learnings weekly, quarterly and annually (both internally and externally as required).
