Job Description

Certified and licensed athletic trainer monitors all athletic practices and games, so to protect the health and well-being of the athletes. Having a certified and licensed athletic trainer onsite has been proven beneficial in reducing medical liability, thus reducing costs. The athletic trainer is responsible for the emergency care, prevention, assessment, management, treatment and rehabilitation of all injuries sustained by athletes. Also, work with team physicians to maintain NJCAA medical compliance and provide each athlete with a pre-participation physical examination prior to participation in intercollegiate athletics.

Job Duties

  • Stretching, strengthening, agility, and conditioning of all athletes.

  • Conduct pre-participation and post participation physicals.

  • Supervise all sports Baseball, Softball, Women's Volleyball, Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Basketball, Cross Country and Cheer.

  • Supervise work study students and supervise and preceptor to UNLV athletic training students.

  • Monitor and work with staff on infectious disease procedures.

  • Conduct an initial assessment of an athlete's injury or illness in order to provide emergency or continued care, and to determine diagnosis and treatment.

  • Care for athletic injuries using physical therapy equipment, techniques, and medication.

  • Plan for infectious disease protocols and enforcement.

  • Evaluate athlete's readiness to play and provide participation clearances when necessary and warranted.

  • Apply protective or injury preventive devices such as tape, bandages, or braces to body parts such as ankles, fingers or wrists.

  • Assess and report the progress of recovering athletes to coaches and doctors

  • Collaborate with physicians in order to develop and implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries.

  • Advise athletes on the proper use of equipment.

  • Plan and implement comprehensive athletic injury and illness prevention programs.

  • Assist in day to day operations with Head Athletic Trainer

  • Develop training programs and routines designed to improve athletic performance.

  • Travel with athletic teams in order to be available at sporting events.

  • Instruct coaches, athletes, and parents, in the care and prevention of athletic injuries.

  • Inspect playing fields in order to locate any items that could injure players.

  • Lead stretching exercises for team members prior to games and practices.

  • Accompany injured athletes to hospitals.

  • Perform team-support duties; running errands, maintaining equip., and stocking supplies.

  • Recommend special diets in order to improve athlete's health, increase stamina, and/or alter weight.

  • Documenting and recoding information.

  • Maintaining and keeping track that all athletes have primary insurance.

  • Complete necessary forms: Parents Insurance, Permission to Treat, Proof of Loss, NJCAA Hardship Request #2 Form.

  • Perform administrative duties. Assist with fundraising.

  • Maintain a clean and clinical environment. Washing all uniforms.

  • Supervise and mentor student athletic trainers that are volunteering time in order to gain acceptance into a Division 1 Athletic Training Program at UNLV.

  • Work with the assistant program director at UNLV.

  • Supervise work study students and assist with laundry duties.

  • Update and use relevant knowledge. Keep up to date with continuing education units to keep Certifications and Licensing in good standing.

  • Performing general physical activities.

  • Exposure to hot and cold weather and occasional disease and infection such as airborne, bloodborne, and fluid borne pathogens.
