Supervisory Nurse (Perioperative) - GS-0610-12 - Naval Medical Center San Diego, CA

Responsibilities

Major Duties:

Provides direction into ordering of supplies and new/replacement equipment. Collaborates with other ancillary support departments in troubleshooting problems with specialty equipment. Clinic expert; provides consultation to staff and command leadership on advanced concepts related to decontamination and sterilization of each type of equipment and dictated by original manufacturer in accordance with the Food and Drug Association's official validation requirements. Organizes and implements training opportunities for operating room staff to instrumentation reprocessing and implications to patient care.

Ensures strict adherence to aseptic technique; ensures correct methods of sterilization and disinfection are used, as appropriate for materials being processed. Provides incentives and opportunities for growth and development for up to thirty staff assigned to the sterile processing department. Provides a positive attitude for good morale. Responsible for control of the Sterile Processing Department schedule to ensure proper manning for around the clock operations. Receives additions and changes to the OR schedule, documenting information as required by OR policy.

Constructs personnel schedules to accommodate safe coverage for procedures as required. Completes periodic performance appraisals for assigned nurses, operating room technologists and instrument technicians. Writes yearly performance appraisals, special advancement evaluations, letters of appreciation, commendation, recommendation for medals, and records of counseling sessions. Maintains good interdepartmental and intradepartmental relations.

Provides a safe environment for staff and patients by requiring compliance with all safety measures to prevent accidents or injuries to patients and equipment. Participates on selected committees and performs collateral duties as assigned within the Command and Operating Room Department. Conducts staff meetings for the purpose of exploring policies, procedures, and goals of the department to obtain the support of the employees in the implementation of practice changes.

Reviews, revises, plans, develops, and implements policies and procedures necessary for the delivery of quality care to patients and their families. Effective change agent-able to influence policy, procedures and new approaches to nursing practice. Directs and guides staff in providing both physical care and psychological support to patients and families.

Business Management:

Independently develops sterilization guidelines, ensuring that perioperative standards for all services meet regulatory and professional practice criteria. Collaborates with multiple surgical subspecialty services in the planning and effective utilization of multi-million dollars' worth of surgical instrumentation. Collaborates with physicians to provide training opportunities and expansion of the scope of services through the efficient use of sterilization technology.

Nursing:

Serves as Perioperative Nurse Specialist with advanced skills in the utilization of various reprocessing and sterilization technology applied to various equipment types in multiple subspecialties. Directs and provides hands-on nursing care in the Operating Room in a manner reflective of the hospital's philosophy and objectives. Independently plans, organizes and implements nursing care in the operating room.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

US Citizenship required

Degree:

A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensure:

A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.

Foreign Degree:

A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Professional Nursing Experience:

-Specialized experience is defined as: assisting with health education activities; assessing individual's health status; and providing occupational health consultation.

-One year of operating room experience providing the following surgical services; general, ENT, urology, oral, orthopedic, obstetric and gynecological, ophthalmology procedures.

Conditions of Employment:

1. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Basic Life Saver (BLS) certification.

2. Must successfully pass a urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.

3. Mission Essential Position:
This position has been designated as mission essential, consistent with the criteria described in DoD Instruction (DoDI) 3020.42, “Defense Continuity Plan Development.” Mission essential positions are those that are needed to ensure the continued operation of mission essential functions of an activity, as defined in DoDI 3020.42.
