The Highlights: The Laboratory Animal Technician will provide diversified technical services to the research program by providing husbandry and care to a wide variety of vertebrate animals, maintaining all facility systems, equipment, instruments and rooms, and supporting all research activity as directed by the various investigators.
What You'll Do:
- Responsibilities include providing excellent care for all vertebrate animals in the Research Support Facility and General Biology Laboratory utilizing institutional and federal guidelines for the care and use of animals. This includes providing food, water, containment and other necessities as required for each individual animal type, and receiving, transporting and quarantining animals. It also involves monitoring temperature and humidity levels in the animal rooms, ensuring proper functioning of all common facility equipment, providing daily health checks of the animals, communicating with the consulting veterinarian, investigators and other facility personnel, and reporting any irregularities to the Director. The technician is also responsible for changing all soiled cages, food and water twice weekly, and replacing half the tank water twice weekly.
- Technician is also responsible for any special care that is required of some animals such as animal breeding and rearing, pre- and post-operative care, and administration of animal medications, euthanasia, and controlled substances.
- The Caretaker is also responsible for disposing of trash and animal waste according to approved procedures, maintaining food, supplies, and medications at optimum shelf life and adequate stocking levels, sanitizing and/or sterilizing animal caging, equipment, instruments, and rooms, record-keeping of animal lines and pedigrees, and maintenance of daily records of animal care and facility maintenance for reports to be submitted to federal agencies.
- GED or High School Diploma required.
- Preferred Qualifications: An associate's degree (A.A. or A.S.), vocational training, or AALAS certification at Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or higher level preferred. A bachelor's degree or equivalent in Animal Science, Biology, or other Life Sciences strongly preferred. One year of related experience preferred. Familiarity with research use of rodents and/or fish, including all applicable federal and state regulations, preferred.
