The Highlights: Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Retention Specialist is responsible for managing proactive and reactive efforts to promote student success and retention for students participating in targeted support initiatives (e.g. new transfer students, academically at-risk students, first-generation students, etc). The Specialist provides individualized support, manages peer support coaching initiatives, and uses data to inform outreach, communication, programming, and interventions. This position requires an identity-conscious, theory-informed, and student-centered approach that holistically supports students in overcoming barriers and navigating university systems. This is a gift-funded position for a 1-year period. Renewal will be dependent on available funds.
What You'll Do:
- Individualized Student Support & Outreach
Provide proactive and responsive support to an assigned caseload of students through one-on-one meetings, outreach, and success planning using student development and positive psychology frameworks. Partner with academic and student service offices to coordinate support, resolve barriers, and advocate for student needs. - Program & Student Staff Management
Supervise a team of student employees within the Peer Success Coaching program, including hiring, training, scheduling, and day-to-day oversight of student staff. - Communication & Programming
Develop and deliver timely communications and success-focused programs/events that foster student development and engagement, including but not limited to Skills Labs, workshops, and population specific programs. - Data Management & Assessment
Track student progress and engagement using institutional systems; analyze trends to inform outreach, communication strategies, and program improvements; assess program effectiveness. - Divisional & Departmental Collaboration
Collaborate on departmental events, programs, and initiatives; Provide supplemental assistance to support other student populations or projects as needed. Serve on departmental and divisional committees; - Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Student Affairs/Higher Education/College Student Personnel/Counseling or related field required; Master's degree preferred.
- 1-2 years of professional experience in Higher Education or Student Affairs required with advocacy, counseling or case management focus especially in sensitive situations preferred.
- Experience with academic advising, success coaching, or academic enhancement preferred.
- Ability to communicate and interact effectively with people of all ages and identities required.
- Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and effectively work on a team required.
- Ability to plan, prepare, and deliver effective presentations required.
- Experience supervising student staff preferred.
- Knowledge of college student development theories.
- Experience designing marketing collateral using Canva and Microsoft Suite preferred.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel) required.
- After Hours work may be required.
