Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Nurse/Registered Nurse First Assistant to join our dynamic Cardiothoracic Surgery team. This role is primarily focused in the Operating Room, supporting complex cardiac surgical procedures including coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repair/replacement, and other thoracic interventions.
The Physician Assistant (PA) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN/RNFA) functions in a medical support role to the physician in the provision of medical care, and works under the direction, supervision and responsibility of a physician. Appointment of PAs/APRN/RNFAs and the duties and responsibility approved for each appointee are governed by the pertinent sections of the Public Health Law; the Education Law; the Official Compilation of Codes, Rules, Regulations of State of New Jersey; Hospital and Medical Staff Bylaws; and policies, rules, regulations of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Job Essentials:
- OR experience as a PA/APN/RNFA required; surgical assisting, open and/or endoscopic vein harvest, open and/or endoscopic radial artery harvest, suturing skills highly desirable.
- Assist in cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures, including vein harvesting and first assist duties.
- Provide perioperative care including pre-op assessments, post-op management, and discharge planning.
- Participate in on-call coverage as scheduled.
- Approaching a patient to elicit a detailed and accurate history, perform an appropriate physical examination, identify problems, record information and interpret and
present information to the supervising physician. - Suturing and caring for wounds including removing sutures and dips and changing
dressings. - Providing patient counseling services and patient education consistent with directions of
the supervising physician. - Assisting a physician in an inpatient setting by conducting patient rounds, recording
patient progress notes, determining and implementing therapeutic plans jointly
with the supervising physician and compiling and recording pertinent narrative
case summaries. - Assisting a physician in the delivery of services to patients requiring continuing care
in a private home, nursing home, extended care facility or other setting,
including the review and monitoring of treatment and therapy plans. - Maintain accurate documentation and communicate effectively with patients, families, and care teams.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and contribute to departmental growth.
- 1–2 years of experience in cardiac surgery preferred; new graduates with strong surgical rotations will be considered.
- Strong clinical judgment, manual dexterity, and ability to perform under pressure.
Education Requirements:
- Graduate of an approved PA program with a bachelor's degree.
- Graduate of an approved APN/RNFA program with a Master's degree.
License/Certification/Registry:
- Current NJ license as PA
- Current NJ license as APN/RNFA
- Active CDS & DEA Registration
- BLS & ACLS Certifications
