
Description
The Operations Engineer will support day-to-day operations for the propane/propylene Splitter plants in Mont Belvieu, TX and will report directly to the unit Manager. This position plays a crucial role in providing technical direction and leadership for safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the facility. The Operations Engineer collaborates with various stakeholders and support groups to meet production targets, optimize daily operation of the plant, and achieve reliability improvements. This position is a hands-on role. Responsibilities include troubleshooting, process optimization, and improving plant run time. Other duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide production and process optimization, troubleshooting, data analysis, and technical support to the operations organization.
- Review and develop operating procedures, diagrams, training materials, and job aids as required to properly document, teach, and optimize site operations.
- Track variable costs and identify opportunities to reduce those costs via process optimization.
- Organize, lead, and participate in improvement initiatives, projects, and process optimization teams to deliver specific, focused, time bound improvement objectives.
- Monitor operations on a daily/weekly basis, reviewing KPI's, operating logs, Distributed Control System (DCS) trends, quality results, and other sources of data to ensure reliable, consistent, and cost-effective operations.
- Work with Process Controls Engineers to make improvements to unit control philosophy.
- Intervene where appropriate to identify and resolve operating issues.
- Guide and assist Field Engineering team on the design and implementation of new facility processes and/or equipment upgrades.
- Provide process engineering support during unit turnarounds. This includes activities such as shutdown/startup support, troubleshooting, and internal inspections.
- Implement, monitor, and maintain reliability improvement techniques such as predictive and preventive maintenance, root cause analysis, and risk-based inspection.
- Ensure compliance with all steps of OSHA 1910.119 / Process Safety Management and DOT regulations.
- Maintain the calculation basis for unit's permits and prepare emission event calculations.
- Work with Field Environmental team to ensure compliance with all aspects of site permits.
- Satisfactorily perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
The successful candidate will meet the following qualifications:
- A minimum of a bachelor's degree, chemical engineering preferred.
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in plant environment, or related industry is required.
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience with production, process, or mechanical troubleshooting and optimization activities.
- Proficiency in basic Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) is required.
- Working knowledge of reliability improvement techniques such as predictive and preventive maintenance, root cause analysis, risk-based inspections, and total productive maintenance is preferred.
- Experience with Process Modeling software, such as Hysys, Unisim, Promax is preferred.
- Must show strong initiative, be self-motivated, work with minimal supervision. Must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and in writing, and be detailed oriented with the ability to handle fast-paced projects with constantly changing priorities and scope.
- Must be proficient in balancing multiple priorities and activities and be able to meet deadlines in a timely and accurate manner.
- Must demonstrate a proven track record of working in a team environment, possess a strong technical/problem solving aptitude and be data driven.
- Ability to solve complex problems by identifying and enrolling appropriate resources is required.
- Knowledge of DCS and advanced process control systems is preferred.
- Ability to work night shifts as needed during plant outages.
- Ability to perform confined space entry and inspection work as needed during plant outages.
