Description
The Nursing Instructor - MSN is responsible for the orientation, continuing education, and staff development of nursing staff/patients in assigned areas.
- Performs needs assessments, analyzes results and identifies training opportunities based on those results.
- Develops and designs educational offerings based on needs assessments and/or organizational/departmental requirements, the educational process, and principles of adult education.
- Delivers educational offerings based on adult education learning principles.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of educational offerings to ensure that knowledge and/or skills learned are being applied on the job and have an impact on staff performance in meeting departmental/ organizational goals.
- Participates in annual review and revision of staff orientation.
- Coordinates a comprehensive, unit-specific program, inclusive of core competencies for staff in assigned areas.
- Monitors completion of tests and validation of skills and records/files appropriately.
- Communicates progress and clinical performance to nurse manager as appropriate.
- Assists in an annual review of mandatory education and core competencies based upon requirements of NJDOH, JCAHO, and Hackensack University Medical Center.
- Plans and implements in-services based upon identified learning needs of staff/patients.
- Documents all in-services inclusive of objectives, evaluations, and attendance.
- Assists staff in planning and developing nursing grand rounds, as requested.
- Participates in the coordination of education programs generated by the department.
- Collaborates with education specialist, advanced practice nurses, and nurse managers to enhance educational support in assigned areas.
- Collaborates with clinical instructors in other areas to resolve clinical practice issues and facilitate staff education.
- Acts as a mentor for selected students of professional nursing, as appropriate.
- Evaluates, with input from preceptors, the clinical performance of new staff.
- Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
- Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited program in Nursing.
- Master's degree in nursing.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in relevant area of patient care specialty
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
