Job Summary

The Director, Office of the Poʻo Kula will (1) provide direct support to the campus Poʻo Kula in managing and assisting in the oversight of key strategic initiatives and projects of the organization; (2) coordinate the organization, tracking, reporting and follow through on key initiatives, assignments, deadlines, and other items; (3) assist the campus Poʻo Kula in developing, maintaining, and advancing key relationships; (4) serve as a trusted advisor and thought partner to the campus Poʻo Kula; and (5) assist the campus Poʻo Kula in the overall management of the campus Poʻo Kula Office. Serves as a key member of the Poʻo Kulaʻs core leadership team.

Essential Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Support

  • Connects the multitude of work/information/people and owns, shapes and drives critical campus enterprise initiatives internally and externally with stakeholders and organizations.
  • Maintains an outward-in and forward-looking perspective to anticipate external and future happenings that may shape and impact KS Hawaiʻi's (KSH) strategic goals and achievement of KS' vision. Fosters the organization's readiness and ability to share this perspective as it influences the volume, scope and timing of the organization's multiple concurrent work pieces and crossfunctional/cross-sector interactions & initiatives.
  • Seeks, learns and maintains a menu of tools and methods that support KSH strategy development, design/root cause analysis, project management and change leadership.
  • Prepares for and facilitates (as needed) “critical path” campus leadership meetings
  • Provides oversight and guidance to strategic planning processes critical to the group/organization that fall within KSHʻs work. May include consultation on any and all aspects of a strategic plan from planning to implementation, analysis and reporting, business processes, issues/conflict identification and resolution.
  • Provide leadership on large and complex project planning and tracking, managing scope, activity, incorporating important organizational information, delivery and deadlines, resources, budget and reporting to achieve KS' strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to determine and prioritize business strategies and facilitate workflows advancing them.
  • Identifies issues that could impact the successful execution of the campus' commitments. Elevates issues about which the Poʻo Kula should be aware and framing/positioning ideas to resolve the problem/mitigate the risk.

Relationship Management & Communications

  • Cultivates relationships within the group to strengthen the overall group's cohesion and performance level.
  • Provides strategic consulting, partnership and advisory on strategy development and implementation, knowledge sharing/dissemination/communication, decision-making and action. Serves as trusted thought partner to campus Poʻo Kula and group/divisional leadership.
  • Drives strategic communication on behalf of the Poʻo Kula. Communications range from the Poʻo Kula  updates at group meetings to follow up correspondence related to the Poʻo Kula's various meetings with the CEO, her peer executives, direct reports and staff.
  • Provides change leadership to guides, manages, lead and support campus, unit leadership and teams through changes associated with specific organizational initiatives and projects. Agent of change who can effectively adjust approach and efforts accordingly in shifting situations and ambiguity.

Operations & Management

  • Improves efficiency of the business through managing the time of the Poʻo Kula.
  • Influences staff through setting of shared goals, communication, information sharing and transparency. An excellent negotiator who is able to cultivate and manage relationships with all team members. Fosters and maintains a high performing environment based on teamwork, commitment, accountability, co-operation, collaboration and direct, timely feedback.
  • Develop mechanisms to monitor progress of multiple projects across initiatives and ensure alignment with overall program goals.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - an equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Bachelor's degree in Business/Management or related field.
  • Minimum 8 years of related experience, including project management, strategic planning, change management, stakeholder engagement, strategic communication
  • Ability to operate with great latitude for independent judgment, confidentiality, discretion, and initiative.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize data and information to knowledge for sound decision-making.
  • Ability to establish trust, respect, and deal with highly confidential and sensitive information on a regular basis.
  • Ability to analyze and conceptualize, and to work with a high degree of accuracy.
  • High level of business acumen and political acumen including strong knowledge and experience in negotiation, consulting, evaluation and ethical practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, ability to anticipate and navigate multiple environments, sound judgment, emotional intelligence, and ability to positively influence others at all levels of the organization. Effective change management agent.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement. Appreciation for creativity and innovation to implement initiatives and improve processes.
  • Excellent planning, organization, and facilitation skills to leverage the highest return during meetings/workshops with a wide range of audiences.
  • Solution-oriented, ability to generate ideas to develop innovative solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to include influential verbal and written communication skills and effective presentation skills to communicate with all levels of stakeholders (executive management, project partners, external constituents, etc.).
  • Coaching and mentoring skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in an education setting
  • More than 5 years of directly related relevant experience working at a senior leadership or management level in support of an organizational or campus executive.
  • Experience managing/supervising staff.
  • Knowledge and familiarity of Kamehameha Schools internal policies, procedures, strategic vision/plan, tactical plan, vision, mission, and goals.
  • Experience in mentoring/coaching, collaborating, leading, and facilitating leadership teams or working groups.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian culture and language.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus. 
  • Occasionally stand and walk, write by hand, and lift, carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.

Based on the compensation range provided below, salaries are commensurate with job-related experience, skills and competencies, education, internal equity, length of work year, and other organizational needs.
