Kamehameha Schools Preschools (KSP) is actively seeking a Principal (Po'o Kumu) to oversee our Hawaii and Maui Island regions.

Job Summary

Work closely with the Po'o kula and other staff in being a role model, providing leadership and aligning all actions to support the achievement of KS' E Ola! Learner Outcomes through the delivery of Hawaiian Culture Based Education (HCBE) across KS Preschools statewide. Leads and participates in the development and execution of long and short-term planning to achieve the KS vision and preschool program goals and outcomes.  Provides leadership in curriculum, instruction and assessment, directs and manages the school counseling services and partners with behavioral health services, supports the overall management and daily operations of multiple preschool regions and sites. Creates conditions that builds capacity for learning and collaboration among KS Preschools. Provides direct supervision, support and coaching to management and support staff. Establishes and maintains relationships and collaborations with community organizations and resources. Engages in partnerships, initiatives and advocacy that promote KS' strategic vision and the enterprise early learning strategies.  Represents KS preschool leadership in regions and community in collaboration with other Kamehameha Schools groups and divisions.

Essential Responsibilities

Leadership, Strategy and Planning

  • Leads and participates in the design and implementation of internal structures, systems and policies.
  • Works to ensure that adequate systems and resources are in place to maintain a high-quality HCBE early learning program and to ensure consistent delivery of services across the state.
  • Collaborate and provide leadership and administrative support for program initiatives, as assigned.
  • Clearly articulates the KS vision and how the preschool activities, goals and outcomes align with the vision to promote overall student well-being and achievement of E Ola!
  • Engages in data analysis to understand the unique needs and characteristics of individual preschool regions and sites. Works closely with Hope Po'o Kumu and other leadership to develop and implement action plans and strategies to support key operational tasks such as student recruitment and enrollment and staff recruitment and retention.
  • Provides timely and effective communication to all stakeholders.

Community Engagement

  • Represents preschools in regions and community in collaboration with other KS divisions.
  • Engages in community-based partnerships, initiatives and advocacy that promote KS' strategic vision and system building efforts for universal public preschool and strengthens the statewide early learning system.
  • Works with community partners and other KS divisions to identify and secure resources that help to address the educational needs of preschool keiki across the state.

Staff Supervision and Capacity Building

  • Conducts regular, frequent and focused formal and informal observations to include but not limited to classroom visits and walk-throughs.
  • Meets regularly with regional leadership and other staff to assess progress, staff needs and to facilitate collaboration within and across regions.
  • Provides direction for and supports the design and coordination of professional development, ensuring that it is congruent with preschool goals and priorities and informed by data.
  • Responsible to help grow and develop regional preschool leaders.
  • Provides direct supervision, support and coaching to management and support staff.

Operations and Administration

  • Ensures the consistent application of state licensing regulations, accreditation standards and KS policies to meet requirements for staff and student's health, safety and well-being across multiple regions.
  • Works in collaboration with other KS groups to support program delivery and provide excellent customer service.
  • Oversees the creation of the regional budgets to include a review of current and past fiscal expenditures, projections for future expenses aligned with preschool goals, educational strategies and overarching KS strategic plan.
  • Works with Hope Po'o Kumu to understand the needs of preschool regions and sites to determine how to optimize the preschool budget and resource allocation.

Curriculum, Assessment, Instruction System

  • Under the direction of the Po'o Kula or designee, provides feedback to and communicates to preschool staff, the design and delivery of all pertinent curriculum, assessments and related educational program functions for the preschool-system including creating prototypes, implementation, alignment, and timing and sequence of program innovation and change.
  • Collaborates and communicates with preschool leaders to ensure curriculum change follows a timetable of logical and timely development, sequenced so as not to overload teachers with implementation responsibilities. Ensure the evaluation of assessment plans to include data analyses and utilization in decision-making at all levels.
  • Ensures that curriculum/program documents are consistent in format to promote user friendliness for use by preschool leadership and teaching staff.


Student and Ohana Engagement, Support and Well-Being

  • Creates a supportive and positive learning environment through effective use of instructional and operational strategies that establishes a culture for learning, engages all learner abilities and includes a system that effectively supports, and addresses the needs of students and families.
  • Creates a school culture that promotes a purposeful, positive and progressive environment in which students, families, faculty and staff feel connected, acknowledged and valued. 
  • Responsible to ensure consistent implementation of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and that policies, procedures and supports are relevant and appropriate for Native Hawaiian preschool students and families.
  • Regularly facilitates meetings and collaboration between preschool leadership, school counselors and behavior health specialists to clarify and update MTSS processes and procedures and plan for related staff training and PD.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Master's Degree in Educational Administration, Counseling, Curriculum and Instruction, or other education-related field (early childhood education).

  • Minimum 6 years of related experience in an educational field.

  • Minimum 5 years of PK–6 teaching experience.

  • Minimum 5 years of school administration, director or manager experience.

  • 3 years experience in Hawaiian Culture Based Education.

  • Ability to meet State of Hawai'i Department of Human Services requirements for Preschool Teacher in a center-based setting.
  • Hawaiian Cultural Commitment: Willingness to learn and exhibit a commitment to an improved, high-quality education system for Native Hawaiian learners.
  • Must be able to understand and support the importance of revitalizing and promoting Hawaiian cultural vibrancy in achieving KS' mission.
  • Appreciation for Native Hawaiian culture and language perpetuation.
  • Ability to maintain composure, tact, sensitivity and flexibility during peak periods and crisis intervention situations. High level of integrity to handle confidential information regularly seen and discussed.
  • Understands the inextricable relationship between culture and education and how that manifests itself in a preschool setting.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and functions with demanding and competing deadlines under conditions of urgency and pressure.
  • Ability to be adaptive and shift with job demands and conditions.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively to meet deliverables and outcomes. Self-motivated and takes initiative.
  • Ability to work long and flexible hours.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in order to manage and resolve conflicts.
  • Strong communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly with a wide audience. Strong written and oral presentation.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to use word processor and software/programs, e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint in daily work.
  • Willing and available to work long and flexible hours, including evening events and travel on a regular basis state-wide as required.
  • Valid Hawaiʻi driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with state licensing for center-based preschool and NAEYC accreditation.
  • Hawaiian language and cultural competence.
  • Familiarity with KS mission, strategic plan, operations.
  • Previous work with diverse learners and communities
  • Understanding of and ability to utilize current national and international trends in education.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequently stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequently twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.
  • Frequently drive to various assigned preschool locations.

Working Conditions

  • This position involves traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands and continental U.S. to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
  • On-call status is expected 24:7 for preschool related business.
