Responsible for ensuring quality of care, patient-first focus and adequate patient access in daily operations within Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech Therapy services supporting Keck Medical Center through fiscal responsibility, resource allocation, continual process improvement, quality assurance and collaboration with physician and administrative leadership. Works with the Service Line leadership team toward the end goal of positioning Keck Medical Center to be the most advanced and comprehensive center for Therapy Services in California, achieved through the over-arching organizational strategies of Patient-First, clinically integrated, quality outcome-driven model of care. Works with Keck Medical Center leadership and Faculty to develop and oversee an operational strategy deployment to deliver the clinical, research, and education missions of the department.

Essential Duties:

  • Facilitates the development of the collective Therapy Services organization through coordination, growth, and marketing initiatives with appropriate entities across the inpatient and outpatient system of care.
  • Participates in a multidisciplinary approach for the development of strategic initiatives, tactics, and implementation plan in partnership with senior executives, service line nurse leadership, shared services management, and physician leadership.
  • Collaborate with leadership within USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy and USC Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy to ensure USC's pursuits of education and innovation are supported
  • Collaborates with Case Management, Social Work and Post-Acute Care leadership to ensure hospital and medical system throughput goals are addressed from a Therapy perspective.
  • Develops and implements ongoing quality and operational process improvements through the demonstration of quantifiable clinical and operational outcomes, safety management, and operational efficiency in collaboration with physicians, nursing, and operational leaders.
  • Participates in, and when necessary, collaborates to develop new programs and marketing plans for the Therapy Services organization according to identified need.
  • Monitors space and resource utilization to support requirements. Oversees a staff of approximately 100 FTE's and an annual operating budget of ~ $15M. Ensures budget targets are achieved.
  • Prepares and submits operational and capital budget recommendations for assigned service line for Senior Leadership approval; revises as appropriate. Reviews, modifies, and approves budget recommendations of assigned departments, programs or sections as part of annual budgeting process. Monitors assigned budget(s) and adheres to budget and productivity guidelines.
  • Responsible for the P&L of each department, including developing and implementing tools to improve efficiency, productivity, and overall financial performance
  • Demonstrates and practices a workstyle reflecting the mission, vision, and values of Keck Medicine
  • Participates in the selection of new service line team members, orients, and trains new team members. Ensures competence of assigned team members and compliance with regulatory requirements, organizational policy, and performance requirements. Forecasts staffing needs, defines position requirements, and ensures team member development needs are met.
  • Ensures Joint Commission and regulatory standards are met across all services.
  • Hiring new employee, evaluating performance, managing teams when necessary, facilitating ongoing learning and development
  • Cultivates, coordinates, coaches, and supports service line operations in collaboration with physician and nurse leadership to create culture of world class service excellence across the inpatient and outpatient care continuums, as appropriate. Plans short- and long-term changes that improve the efficiency in the delivery of patient care.
  • Assists with maintenance of information systems and all procedural statistics as determined necessary for quality, outcomes, growth, & development.
  • Partners with physician leadership to maintain and build new internal and external physician relationships.
  • Provide recommendation and input into the service line annual goals consistent with institutional goals, needs of the community, and future directions of healthcare. Creates updates and maintains service line metrics and analytics reporting process, including the communication of such metrics and analytics.
  • Directs the development, enhancement and maintenance of information systems through subordinate computing staff to support operations. Ensures that internal systems complement University-wide systems and that information is reconciled on a regular basis.
  • Oversees billing operations through subordinate staff, ensuring maximum net revenues, efficiency, and effectiveness in collecting accounts receivables.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Master's degree In Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or Speech-language Pathology
  • Req 8 years Experience in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or Speech-language Therapy in a hospital setting.
  • Req Committed to excellence in patient care and customer service.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to utilize effective, appropriate and diplomatic oral and written communication skills.
  • Req Excellent analytical, problem-solving, planning and evaluation skills.
  • Req Demonstrates ability to effectively work with physicians, staff, and patients.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Master's degree In Healthcare Administration (MHA), Business (MBA), or related field preferred
  • Pref 2 years or more Management experience in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or Speech-language Pathology


Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Physical Therapist - PT (CA DCA) License in Occupational Therapy or Speech-language Pathology in lieu of Physical Therapy
  • Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Req Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $158,080.00 - $260,832.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
