Job Title: Staff Accountant
Location: Port Arthur, TX
Type: Long-Term Contract (Potential for Permanent Hire)
Salary Range: $60,000 – $68,000 annually

About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Staff Accountant for a long-term contract opportunity based in Port Arthur, TX. This role supports a well-established institution in the higher education sector. While this is a contract position, there is potential for permanent employment based on performance and business needs. The ideal candidate will bring a strong accounting foundation, excellent attention to detail, and a background in governmental or higher education accounting.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support the annual budget development process as a strategic team member.

• Monitor and reconcile budgeted positions and changes throughout the year.

• Assist in the preparation of the Annual Financial Report (AFR).

• Support the biennial Legislative Appropriations Request (LAR) process.

• Reconcile quarterly reports with the Legislative Budget Board's ABEST system.

• Perform reconciliations of local bank accounts and other financial records.

• Review internal accounting and finance reconciliations.

• Manage daily accounting tasks, including position activations, EPAF approvals, and responding to budget inquiries.

• Conduct annual escheat procedures.

• Serve as a backup to the Executive Director for special projects and other assigned duties.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited institution.

• Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience.

• CPA certification is preferred.

• Experience in higher education or governmental accounting is highly desirable.

• Proficiency in understanding and applying federal, state, and local financial regulations.

• Strong problem-solving, multitasking, and analytical skills.

• High degree of written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain strong professional relationships.

• Normal office environment

• Standard working hours, with some flexibility based on project needs
