Job Title: Staff Accountant
Location: Port Arthur, TX
Type: Long-Term Contract (Potential for Permanent Hire)
Salary Range: $60,000 – $68,000 annually
About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Staff Accountant for a long-term contract opportunity based in Port Arthur, TX. This role supports a well-established institution in the higher education sector. While this is a contract position, there is potential for permanent employment based on performance and business needs. The ideal candidate will bring a strong accounting foundation, excellent attention to detail, and a background in governmental or higher education accounting.

Support the annual budget development process as a strategic team member.

Monitor and reconcile budgeted positions and changes throughout the year.

Assist in the preparation of the Annual Financial Report (AFR).

Support the biennial Legislative Appropriations Request (LAR) process.

Reconcile quarterly reports with the Legislative Budget Board's ABEST system.

Perform reconciliations of local bank accounts and other financial records.

Review internal accounting and finance reconciliations.

Manage daily accounting tasks, including position activations, EPAF approvals, and responding to budget inquiries.

Conduct annual escheat procedures.

Serve as a backup to the Executive Director for special projects and other assigned duties.

Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited institution.

Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience.

CPA certification is preferred.

Experience in higher education or governmental accounting is highly desirable.

Proficiency in understanding and applying federal, state, and local financial regulations.

Strong problem-solving, multitasking, and analytical skills.

High degree of written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain strong professional relationships.
