POSITION SUMMARY: 

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking a motivated and skilled Vaccine Research Biologist to join the Vaccine Production Program (VPP) at the Vaccine Research Center. The successful candidate will be integral in the development of clinical vaccine and therapeutic candidates, including viral vaccines, recombinant proteins, virus-like particles, and monoclonal antibodies. Responsibilities include conducting experimental investigations on cell line growth, optimizing cell culture and fermentation conditions, and troubleshooting processes. The Biologist will independently operate bioreactors, document experimental results, and contribute to the tech transfer of processes to clinical manufacturing facilities. This role demands expertise in novel technology development, serving as a subject matter expert (SME) for automated bioreactors and spectroscopy techniques, and maintaining laboratory equipment and compliance standards. The Biologist will play a critical role in advancing vaccine production and contributing to publications in peer-reviewed journals. 

 

TASKS. The contractor shall: 

  • Develop clinical vaccine or therapeutic candidates, including viral vaccines, recombinant proteins, and monoclonal antibodies. 

  • Conduct experimental investigations on cell line growth and optimize cell culture/fermentation conditions. 

  • Troubleshoot cell culture and fermentation processes and document findings in lab notebooks and technical reports. 

  • Transfer processes to clinical manufacturing facilities and capture process descriptions. 

  • Independently set up and operate bioreactors and cell culture equipment for development studies. 

  • Perform cell culture experimental studies and investigate novel technologies for improved process controls. 

  • Serve as an SME in setup and execution of studies using automated parallel bioreactors (AMBR250). 

  • Operate high-throughput UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy (SpectraMax iD3) and maintain metabolite analyzers (NOVA FLEX2). 

  • Participate in laboratory meetings, uphold compliance obligations, and maintain laboratory and equipment. 

  • Contribute experimental results to publications in peer-reviewed journals. 

 

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have: 

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, bioengineering, or other life sciences. 

  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience. 

  • Proficiency in bioreactor operation and cell culture techniques. 

  • Experience with cell culture fermentation and process optimization. 

  • Strong documentation skills for recording and transferring process data. 

  • Expertise in novel technology development for improving cell culture process controls. 

  • Subject matter expertise with automated parallel bioreactors (AMBR250) and spectroscopy techniques. 

  • Capability to maintain, troubleshoot, and train on metabolite analyzers. 

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, with participation in project meetings and compliance maintenance. 

  • Ability to contribute research findings to peer-reviewed publications.
