Kelly Government Solutions is a strategic supplier and business partner to the federal government and its key suppliers. Kelly Government Solutions offers scientists the opportunity to support basic and applied research projects designed to protect our military and nation from current and emerging biological threat agents. We are seeking a Viral Pathogenesis Technician to provide laboratory support within a Department of Defense laboratory in Frederick, MD. Please note: this position is contingent upon contract award.

This is a long-term contract position which offers:

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITES
  • Provide support to the Viral Pathogenesis Branch (VPB) with laboratory experiments in BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories and shall work with controlled substances.
  • Aid in the execution of scientific studies, basic cell culture, and plaque assays, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and other assays, animal procedures, collection/data analyzing, and maintain laboratory and laboratory equipment.  
  • Support 2-3 Non-human Primate studies and/or swine studies. Shall prepare study materials as needed based on study plan, prepare virus, perform and document observations of animals, and assist with collection and processing of collected samples. Shall perform Complete Blood Count (CBC), general chemistries, coagulations assays and other clinical laboratory-based assays on samples from animals, as needed.   
  • Support 15-20 rodent studies per year. Shall perform inoculations with test article or virus, shall perform and document observations, collect tissues for processing and conduct bleedings.  
  • Perform in vitro testing of candidate vaccines and therapeutic compounds against a variety of viruses. May use 200-300 plates/assays per month.  
  • Prepare all necessary study materials for assigned experiments to include but not limited to preparing cell culture media, labeling tubes, and preparing paperwork. 
  • Perform immunological procedures including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western Blot assays. May perform 200 assays/month. 
  • Perform basic cell culture, plaque assays (PA), plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), PCR, and other assays to support 2-3 NHP and/or swine studies and 15-20 rodent studies. Workload is approximately 750 plates/assays per month. 
  • Serve as a BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 mentor 
  • Responsible for assessing and maintaining laboratory supplies in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratories. Shall assess supplies and ensure supplies are ordered or shall order supplies using house ordering system. Anticipated workload is 10-20 orders/month.  
  • Assist with annual conduct of Equipment Inventory Management in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4. 
  • Contractor shall perform general laboratory maintenance duties, including but not limited to cleaning, preparation for inspections, and containment space monthly duties as assigned by the suite supervisor. Prepare and participate in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 laboratory inspections conducted by Safety, Bio-surety, CDC at a minimum of 2 times a year. 
  • Provide TPOC a Contractor Research Technical Report NLT the last day of each week. 


REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor or master's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related scientific discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of laboratory research experience with a focus on cell and molecular biology techniques such as cell culture, PCR, sequencing, and assay design.
  • Must be comfortable working with animal models for studies and handling bacterial and viral pathogens for in vitro and in vivo studies
  • Shall be experienced with handling both bacterial and viral pathogens for in vitro and in vivo studies with preferred experience in BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-4 biocontainment labs.
  • Willing and able to work in BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 biocontainment labs, which requires eligibility and enrollment in the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) and the Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP)
  • US citizenship as per contract requirements to pass background check and obtain required security clearance
