Overview
Mastercard's global Regulatory organisation is looking for a Senior Counsel to join its Europe team, reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, Regulatory for Europe. The role will work across the team, providing support on multiple issues of critical importance to the European business. This could include providing advice on the regulatory implications of new Mastercard products, advising on regulatory separation requirements, reviewing proposed pricing initiatives and advising the internal team on relevant developments across the company. The role is likely to include a particular focus in the UK, which is a very active market for payments regulation. This is a unique opportunity for a lawyer looking to develop knowledge and expertise across the whole scope of UK and European payments regulation, at a business which sits at the centre of that ecosystem.
Collectively, this will involve a high degree of collaboration working with many others across Mastercard, including global Regulatory team members as well as business counterparts outside the Europe region in roles potentially including Product, Technology, Franchise, Finance, Settlement, Sales, Communications, Strategy and many more. The successful candidate will be part of a global group that manages Mastercard's regulatory footprint under the leadership of Mastercard's General Counsel, Regulatory.
Role
• Providing support and advice both within the European regulatory team and to the wider business on a broad range of regulatory issues and activities impacting Mastercard within the region
• Engaging with business stakeholders, providing the necessary regulatory reviews/approvals and proactively helping to develop their understanding and awareness of regulatory requirements
• Responding to issues and regulatory questions raised by business teams, including those from Mastercard's corporate customers
• From time to time, engaging directly with Mastercard's supervisors and other regulators/central banks, responding to incoming requests, as well as advocating and defending Mastercard's position or approach
• Assessing the impact of external regulatory initiatives on Mastercard, working across the business to develop positioning and drafting relevant consultation responses
• Managing external counsel as necessary, and reviewing and analysing regulatory advice for advancing strategic initiatives
All About You
• A lawyer qualified to practice within the Europe region, with 3-5 years' post qualification experience – some previous payments regulatory experience is desirable, but not essential
• A strong desire to work within the payments sector and to develop knowledge and expertise across the broad scope of regulation affecting Mastercard's business
• Excellent written English and verbal communication skills, combined with an ability to communicate complex regulatory issues in simple and concise terms – additional European language would be an advantage
• Experience of operating within or engaging with a multi-faceted organisation working closely with a variety of teams would be advantageous
• Must demonstrate a proactive, time sensitive, results driven approach in carrying out all duties, obligations and responsibilities
• Self-starter / motivated to work independently and as an effective team member
• A strong commercial awareness, risk-based approach and “yes, if” attitude to providing regulatory advice
