Supporting the underwriting system, the Specialty Group Underwriting Systems Analyst collaborates with other system developers and liaisons to translate user requirements and systems objectives of increasing complexity into a logical, efficient and optimal systems design. This role develops and maintains new and existing applications by writing code to ensure that business rules, security standards and government regulations are met. Performs data analysis by writing queries to pull and validate data, which may be also used for reporting and ad hoc projects as requested by management. Provides consultative and analytical insights about forecasting, management reporting, and other tactical sales metrics to guide decision for growth and retention of specialty product business.

This position has the option to work hybrid; Cleveland, Ohio area residents preferred. 

Responsibilities

Specialty Group Underwriting Systems Analyst (I, II, III, Senior)

  • Develops and maintains underwriting system application by analyzing, designing, and writing code of increasing complexity that satisfies a logical, efficient, and optimal systems design.
  • Develops and creates reporting to support the specialty products division – underwriting, sales and account management, which support our internal and external customers.
  • Creates data analytics to monitor and manage the specialty product book of business ,including segmentation analysis, quarterly analysis and reporting, and reporting to VP and Executive staff. Completes additional ad hoc reporting projects as needed.
  • Supports testing, implementation, and break-fix tasks of underwriting systems.
  • Learns new technical concepts and software languages.
  • Works with database staff and security staff to ensure that data standards and security standards are properly applied.
  • Assists underwriting staff with use of systems, tools and formulas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business, Math, or related field.
  • 0-1 years of work experience in maintaining and developing business systems.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Basic understanding of programming design and coding techniques.
  • Basic understanding and familiarity with SAS, SQL, Office and other components of Microsoft technology (Access, Excel specifically).
  • Basic understanding of DB2 and VB.
  • Basic knowledge of insurance concepts is preferred.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and report design/development.

Specialty Group Underwriting Systems Analyst II

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business, Math, or related field.
  • 1-2 years of work experience in maintaining and developing business systems.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to apply basic programming design and coding techniques.
  • Ability to apply basic SAS, SQL, Office and other components of Microsoft technology (Access, Excel specifically).
  • Understanding of DB2 and VB.
  • Knowledge of underwriting concepts & techniques and general knowledge of employee benefits (group life, disability, dental, vision) is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of data analysis and report design/development.

Specialty Group Underwriting Systems Analyst III

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business, Math, or related field.
  • 3-4 years of work experience in maintaining and developing business systems.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Solid understanding of programming design and coding techniques.
  • Solid understanding and familiarity with SAS, SQL, Office and other components of Microsoft technology (Access, Excel specifically).
  • Preferred solid understanding of DB2 and VB.
  • Basic understanding of Optum's Stepwise Formula Designer.
  • Knowledge of underwriting concepts & techniques and general knowledge of employee benefits (group life, disability, dental, vision) is preferred.
  • Experience in Data analysis and report design/development.

Senior Specialty Group Underwriting Systems Analyst

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business, Math, or related field.
  • 5 years of work experience in maintaining and developing business systems.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Advanced understanding of programming design and coding techniques.
  • Advanced understanding and familiarity with SAS, SQL, Office and other components of Microsoft technology (Access, Excel specifically)
  • Solid understanding of DB2 and VB
  • Advanced understanding of Optum's Stepwise Formula Designer.
  • Knowledge of underwriting concepts & techniques and solid understanding of specialty division products (group life, disability, dental, vision)
