General Summary of Position
Responsible for bringing specimens and request slips to the laboratory, taking reports to the floors, filing reports into the patient's chart, processing specimens delivered to the lab, and maintaining central processing supply levels.  Working hours for this role is 11pm-7:30am Monday- Friday with rotating weekend and holidays.  Initial training for this role will be on day shift, for approximately 2 weeks.  


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect lab requests floor by floor. Lab reports are separated by the floor and kept in pick up slot located next to the Urinalysis section.
  • Pick up reports according to lab processor rounds schedule and deliver them to the appropriate nursing stations.
  • Post patient results on available charts.
  • Verify the correct chart by checking name and medical record number on slips and on the chart.
  • Post results in appropriate lab section.
  • Inform unit secretary or head nurse when results are placed in their basket for L&D, Nursery, and ICU/CCU so they may promptly chart them for proper care of the patient.
  • Promptly take results to the proper floors. Delivering and posting results to the wrong floors can result in serious delay in proper care of the patient.
  • Process specimens received into the lab based on test request.
  • Monitor and maintain central processing inventory levels.
  • Answer phones according to hospital/departmental policy.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED and completion of phlebotomy training course required.

    Experience

    • 1-2 years Prior medical experience preferred.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Eligible for phlebotomy certification required.

    • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
    • Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.

    • Knowledge of medical terminology.


    This position has a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08
