General Summary of Position
Under general supervision of the Senior Director, High Reliability and Patient Safety, plays a lead role in developing, operating, and improving the efficiency of the components of the MedStar Safety Program, while developing close working relationships with AVP Quality, VP Quality and Safety, VP Risk Management, System CNO and System EVP for Clinical Affairs, to understand and support their needs. Uses best practice models to evaluate, re-design, or design and implement components of the Safety Program. Once implemented, identifies and secures necessary resources to ensure ongoing efficient and effective operation of these components, soliciting feedback from engaged parties both at the local and system level. Identifies metrics and processes to ensure that key parameters of the Safety Program are measured, monitored and continuously improved. These responsibilities require close alignment and a strong working relationship with the clinical safety, risk management, and quality leadership in each of the MedStar hospitals and non-acute care facilities. It is also essential that this Manager develop strong working relationships with key stakeholders at the MedStar National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare (NCHFH), the MedStar system level and local Risk Management groups, and the MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI). Collaborates with subject matter and process experts, while working under the direction and support of the Senior Director, High Reliability and Patient Safety.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Develops and contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Ensures compliance with hospital/facility policies and procedures and governmental/accreditation regulations.
  • Builds relationships with entity safety, quality, risk management, clinical and other leaders pertinent to operations of programs, clinical content and proposed improvements.
  • Facilitates system level task forces or councils to plan, implement, and coordinate safety improvement project activities for MedStar.
  • Facilitates the integration and teamwork of the various safety programs throughout MedStar. Responsible for the overall operational planning, development, coordination, implementation, and management of safety initiatives.
  • Identifies the need for regional safety performance improvement initiatives.
  • Integrates the staff at NCFH, MHRI, Data Management and Risk Management teams and other areas as appropriate into Safety initiatives in a standardized and effective way in order to leverage the knowledge and expertise of these groups.
  • Manages the revision, formulation and review of policies and procedures. Oversees operational dashboards of outstanding and ongoing projects, safety issues, and challenges. Drives change by developing standardized processes to manage issues to completion and executing towards the achievement of Quality and Safety Department goals.
  • Prepares and reviews safety reports and analysis of safety data for the AVP, Safety.
  • Under the guidance of Senior Director, High Reliability and Patient Safety executes the strategy for documentation of data driven safety initiatives and outcomes at MedStar.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Master's degree in related field required or
    • experience in lieu of master's degree. required and
    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing. required

    Experience

    • Related experience to include: working knowledge of various safety program operations, processes, and policies; demonstrated understanding of performance improvement mechanisms and data experience working effectively with patient safety officers, risk managment teams, other leaders and front line staff. Experience in working within a team environment as member, facilitator, and process manager. Proven record of managing projects to successful completion. experience with electronic health records, occurrence reporting systems and other data systems. Data policy, or records management exprience helpfel required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure RN License required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Strong communication, organizational, and planning skills.
    • Must have computer skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • Facilitation of sizeable groups of leaders regarding consensus development and best practices.
    • Documentation skills including collaboration on report metrics, strong skills in relationship management in both leadership and staff environments.
    • Clinical content management review skills.
