General Summary of Position

In this role, the phlebotomy specialty technician will be utilized in the anti - coagulation clinic evaluating INR's.  In addition, this associate will also be required to perform administrative duties such as scanning documents, answering phone calls, verifying patient insurance information, accessioning and filling in as needed with front desk responsibilities, while complying with MedStar Health Laboratory Compliance plans. 

Working hours for this role is Monday - Friday, 8am -4:30pm at MedStar Franklin Square Hospital.  


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Collects blood from patients according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Complies with MedStar Laboratory Compliance Plan by ensuring the following: medically necessary diagnosis is submitted (ICD-10 Code/Descriptive Diagnosis), physician signature, determine Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN), obtains the patient signature, if necessary prior to specimen collection.
  • Greets patients in a courteous and professional manner. Verifies correct patient identification in accordance with hospital policy. Performs phlebotomy proficiently (skin and heel punctures when applicable) on all patient types. Places physician orders correctly into LIS. Accurately labels patient specimens immediately after procedure is completed according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a good attendance record. Maintains effective working relationships with other departments and coworkers.
  • Maintains working area in a sanitary condition. Assists with the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and requests supplies as necessary.
  • Participates or assists in training new associates.
  • Responds to telephone calls with courtesy and efficiency.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required, if degree was obtained outside of the United States, education equivalency documentation is required
    • and
    • completion of Hospital approved phlebotomy course required.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification Phlebotomy certification preferred and
    • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State (DRLIC) Valid driver's license in the State of Maryland and dependable vehicle for transportation preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Basic computer skills.
    • Verbal and written communication skills.


    This position has a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08
