Overview:

 

Under direct supervision completes tasks, according to skill level, to assist surgery personnel in providing nursing care and surgical services to patients in the operating room area.

 

Provides assistance to professional nursing staff, surgeons, and anesthesiologists with clearly defined patient care activities.
1.1 Perform daily cleaning schedule. Clean carriers daily with hospital approved disinfectant. Clean patient rooms after each use.
1.2 Proactively restocks patient care areas and work areas with supplies needed daily.
1.3 Empty trash and linen containers after each patient use and as needed.
1.4 Actively participates as member of the team in safety, efficiency and organization of time, supplies and equipment.
1.5 After each patient use: clean carrier, change sheets, restock supplies, dispose of used linen, trash, trays, instruments and other equipment.

Assists the nursing staff in the routine care of the patient, according to standard policy and procedure of the area.
2.1 Assists primary nurse in providing care to the patient an assigned by the assistant nurse manager, charge nurse or supervisor.
2.2 Takes vital signs in the Pre-op and Phase 2 areas as assigned by RN.
2.3 Assists the physician in patient examination and treatment as assigned.
2.4 Performs ECG on patient within 3 minutes of STAT order and 15 minutes of routine order.
2.5 Assists in safe and efficient transportation of the patient.
2.6 Provides safe environment for the patient who requires observation
2.7 Perform patient procedures: empty drainage bags and report volume to nurse, apply monitor leads and oximetry probe.
2.8 Performs phlebotomy for lab specimens as directed by the RN with 95% success rate on first venipuncture attempt.
2.9 Properly handles and labels all lab specimens.
2.10 Accurately enters orders for specimens, EKG and tests.

Maintain equipment, instruments and trays in good working order.
3.1 Complete daily equipment check list
3.2 Report and label all faulty equipment.
3.3 Oxygen tanks are obtained from Bulk stores as needed and are available on every patient carrier.
3.4 Oxygen tanks whether full or empty are stored and maintained properly.
3.5 Maintain the equipment and supply area and the soiled holding area in neat order.

Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication.
4.1 Greets visitors, screening individuals and coordinating activity of ancillary department interfacing with the department.
4.2 Communicates with patient, family, visitor and employees respectfully. Communicates pertinent information to the nurse in charge.
4.3 Correctly assembles patient charts.

Participates in Department functions.
5.1 Attends 80% of staff huddles.
5.2 Maintains strict confidentiality.
5.3 Completes Department Specific Competency annually.

Other Duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager.
6.1 Demonstrates willingness to flex shifts and work in area of greatest need. Stays late as needed whenever possible to help with patient care.

Demonstrates knowledge of special needs and behaviors of specific age groups to include Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric.
7.1 Demonstrates ability to provide care based upon physical, psycho-social, cultural, safety and other age-related factors.
7.2 Demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patients' needs.


Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.Licensure: NoneExperience: NoneCertifications: BLS certified. Required certification must be current before assigned to care for patients independently.Other:Preferred Education: Successful completion of Medical Terminology Course.Preferred Licensure: NonePreferred Experience: Previous Nurse aide and/or phlebotomy experience in acute care setting.Preferred Certifications:Preferred Other:Physical Requirements:•    Position requires the ability to push, pull, and/or lift 50 lbs on a regular basis.•    Position requires prolonged standing and walking during each shift.•    Position requires the ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties.
