Job Description:

Under the leadership of the Department Director and Assistant Director, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing care to patients with acute and chronic psychiatric disorders. Setting for patient care will include both inpatient and outpatient areas as scheduled. Duties include the evaluation and treatments of patients including, but not limited to, performing initial and follow up psychiatric assessments; initiating, renewing, and changing medications; ordering routine laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic tests and providing initial interpretations of results; initiating or expediting requests for consultations, special tests or studies; evaluating and initiating therapy for acute and chronic mental health problems; providing education and training (individual or groups) to the patient and family as necessary; and communicating clinical findings to Physicians. Duties also include documenting all findings and results in the medical record.

Important dimensions of this position consist of excellence in patient care through observation, assessment, nursing judgment, communication skills and interpersonal relations. Must have demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making ability and able to work independently.

Experience

Two years previous experience as a psychiatric nurse practitioner in acute inpatient mental health field strongly preferred. Experience with dual diagnosis patients preferred. Must be an approved Medicare provider. Must demonstrate a thorough and complete understanding of psychotropic medications, side effects, and drug/drug interactions.

Education:

Master's Degree in Nursing required- Exception Nurse Practitioners' qualified or certified as an NP in California or any other state prior to January 1, 2008.

Licensure/Certifications:

Must be currently licensed in California as an NP and be certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized national certifying body that has established standards for nurse practitioners to practice in the State of California. State of California RN and Nurse Practitioner license with specialty certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from ANCC. Furnishing license issued by the Board of Registered Nursing required. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required. Violence de-escalation training must be completed within the first 6 months of hire. Pharmacology Course: Neuroscience Education Institute Master Psychopharmacology Program to be completed within 6 months of hire. DEA registration for Suboxone within 6 months.
