Summer 2025 Field Engineering Intern
As an Engineering Intern at Norfolk Southern (NS), you'll work with Maintenance of way and Structure (MW&S) field crews, officers, and staff on real-world projects that apply your skills and education. You'll assist on various tasks, offering insight into the role of a full-time field supervisor. Interns are placed in one of three areas: line maintenance, program maintenance, or bridges and structures.
Primary Duties:
- Assist MW&S crews and officers.
- Perform track inspections.
- Conduct maintenance on road and yard locations.
- Learn train and track dynamics.
- Learn track inspection techniques.
- Gain knowledge in basic railroad construction.
- Participate in maintenance operations.
- Develop management skills.
Additional Information:
- Interns will engage in hands-on, field-oriented positions.
- The internship aims to expose students to the daily operations of the Engineering Department.
- The program helps students determine if a career in field operations within the railroad industry is suitable.

Work Environment
- Willing to relocate anywhere throughout our 22-state network for the duration of the internship. Housing stipend will be provided to those who apply.
- Typical work hours are between 6 AM to 4 PM Monday - Friday, plus any additional hours as required, including occasional overnight travel. On call work is required at time throughout the summer.
- Interns may also travel with a supervisor to field locations to ensure adherence to corporate and departmental standards and procedures.
- Must be able to work outside and be on your feet daily.
- This is a leadership position that works closely with our Union workforce.
Education
- Pursuing a Bachelor or Graduate Degree
- Preferred Degree Paths: Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, Construction Management, General Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Biosystems Engineering
- Other relevant degrees are considered.
Additional Information:
- All new hires for this safety critical position must complete a pre-employment medical exam including a physical, vision, hearing, alcohol, and drug audit assessment.
- You must have reliable transportation to and from your job location.
Tentative Internship Timeline
5/19/25-8/1/25
Week 1: Safety Training in McDonough, GA
Weeks 2-9: Based out of your training location
Week 10: Close out event and presentations.
Compensation
- Freshman Year (27 or fewer credits): $3,716
- Sophomore Year (28-59 credits): $4,034
- Junior Year (60-89 credits): $4,326
- Senior Year (90 or more credits): $4,600
- Graduate Student: $5,484
Other Pay/Benefit
- Pay one-time roundtrip mileage for out-of-area students.
- $425 bi-monthly housing stipend for out-of-area students (not prorated; note this stipend will be taxed).
