Behavioral Health at Northwell Health
Psychiatry at Northwell

Northwell's Department of Psychiatry aims to improve the behavioral health of the patients and communities we serve by providing a full continuum of high-quality, comprehensive mental health and SUD services. The Department operates 550 inpatient beds, including 74 SUD beds across 7 hospitals, consult services in each of the 23 hospitals and emergency departments, a robust telepsychiatry program, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs, and a full range of outpatient services for all ages and disorders.

To improve access and facilitate earlier diagnosis and treatment, the Department prioritizes integrating behavioral health into settings where people routinely engage such as primary care (adult, pediatric and OB-GYN) and schools. The Department has embedded collaborative care behavioral health specialists in 100 primary care practices and has co-located behavioral health in medical specialty settings such as oncology, transplant surgery, and obstetrics. The Department engages with K-12th grade students and their families and teachers through our school mental health programs. The Behavioral Health College Partnership collaborates with over 100 higher ed institutions in the greater New York region to provide crisis, inpatient, and follow-up outpatient care.

The Department trains the next generation of outstanding clinicians and leaders through 3 psychiatry residency programs (Zucker Hillside Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital, and Mather Hospital). These residency programs provide a remarkable setting and flexible, state-of-the-art curricula that help residents discover their calling and launch their careers as outstanding psychiatrists and emerging leaders.
