Organization Overview
Laboratory Safety and Environmental Health's role at The Rockefeller University is the development and management of the University's environmental health and safety programs. LS&EH works with the University's researchers,other departments on campus,and a wide range of outside regulatory and advisory agencies to ensure that the University is a safe and compliant place to work. In addition to providing support and services to the University,LS&EH conducts research in the health and safety fields. Aimed at minimizing waste,environmental impacts,and laboratory hazards,the staff's research spans the radioactive,biological and chemical aspects of laboratory safety and has resulted in the publication of two books and numerous journal articles.
Overview
Duties for this position includes providing assistance in managing health and safety programs under the general industry standard; provide staff assistance on occupational health and safety issues; conduct program assessments; conduct routine and emergency monitoring for compliance with occupational exposure limits.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Safety Officer II will serve as the primary back-up to the Associate Safety Officer. In addition, the ASO will assist in the following capacity:
Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Safety
- Perform air monitoring as needed/requested
- Calibrate oxygen monitors as needed
- Assist in organizing Safety Officer events
- Assist in developing and providing University training modules
- Assist in laboratory commissioning and decommissioning
FDNY- Back-up Duties
- Escort Fire Inspector on weekly visit
- Log and track all FDNY NOV/VOs
- Ensure that all NOV/VOs are corrected within FDNY specified time frame
- Manage C-14 program
- Maintain FDNY laboratory permit database
General Safety
- Participates in site visits of University facilities
- Hazard analysis: Independently conduct follow-up to audit findings
- Administer the University REVCO loaner program
- Schedule annual fume hood certifications/repairs
- Schedule safety shower inspections
- Update and maintain laboratory room placards
- Maintain and update Safety Posters as needed
Radioisotope Related Duties
- Process and deliver radioactive packages
- Perform contamination checks of equipment and vacated laboratory rooms
- Assist with monthly wipe testing for labs with high radioactive usage
Other Duties
- Spill cleanup - emergency response
- Investigate odors in laboratories
- Assist in processing radioactive isotope packages and distribute to the laboratories
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- BS in Environmental Health Science or related field
- Must possess the ability to lift 50 pounds and wear respiratory protection
- Computer competency in PC/Windows/Microsoft Office
- Ability to gain proficiency in custom EHS software used by the department
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years' experience working in higher education
- Environmental Health and Safety setting preferred

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on various factors, including but not limited to organizational budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

USD $50,000.00/Yr.
Compensation Range: Max
USD $55,000.00/Yr.
