SAIC has an opening for an organized and motivated Mechanical Engineer who is looking for an opportunity to grow with our company as we continue to expand our Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Propulsion Test Facility (NUWC - PTF) support team in Newport, RI. Work will be performed on site at NUWC - PTF. The individual will be part of a collaborative team of engineers and support technicians working to bring projects from the early concept and design phase all the way through fabrication, system integration, and acceptance testing.

The ideal candidate should have experience supporting various projects at all levels showcasing leadership qualities and attributes, as well as project management skills. The candidate should have the ability to discuss projects they have supported and/or led. Candidate should be able to self-manage/self-direct projects, and communicate regularly with customers, engineers, logisticians and technicians.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Support which involves interfacing with the customer to define key test requirements, establishing all supporting test documentation, test unit builds, facility integration and testing operations. 
  • The candidate will need a broad engineering skill-set, well-developed work habits, an enthusiasm for the work, the willingness to get hands-on with the projects when required, an eagerness to learn new things, and the ability to work through challenging projects without extensive oversight.
  • The individual will be responsible for leadership throughout the entire testing process from customer concept to post-test analysis.
  • These projects will broadly include the design and fabrication of components and interfaces for electrical and mechanical systems for both test items and facility infrastructure. Technical writing and engineering documentation proficiency is paramount in order to support the development of Technical Data Packages (TDPs), Test Plans, Integration Plans, Instrumentation Plans, Test Reports and Procedures.  
  • The candidate will have to lead presentations and create the necessary slide packages associated with Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs).  

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and five (5) or more years of experience OR M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and 0 or more years of experience.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain SECRET level clearance.
  • Experience with some of the following:
    • Proficiency in CAD software for the development of 3D models and 2D drawings, preferably SolidWorks.
    • Experience working with and altering templates for 2D drawing creation.
    • Experience developing bills of material (BOMs) for complex assemblies to incorporate on 2D drawings and to use as a costing and tracking tool during projects.
    • Experience creating fabrication drawings, including the use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
    • Knowledge of best design practices to prevent issues during the fabrication phase of the project.
    • Must be highly motivated and have excellent problem solving skills.
    • Must demonstrate strong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently with changing deadlines and priorities.
    • Must be able to work in a customer facing team environment while completing tasks in an unsupervised and self-directed fashion.      
    • Proficiency in technical writing for all forms of test documentation is necessary.
    • Extensive knowledge and understanding of mechanical and electrical systems is preferred.
    • Experience with data acquisition systems is preferred.
