Overview

The Fish & Wildlife Department is accepting applications for a Communications and Outreach Coordinator to lead the department's social media strategy development and implementation, and to support digital marketing, annual publications, and fund development. Strong candidates should have excellent social media, graphic design, and email and web-based marketing skills. Knowledge of Vermont's natural history and ecology, hunting and fishing regulations, and photography and videography are desirable but not required. The position will involve some fieldwork with department biologists, as well as occasionally representing the department to the public at education and trade events. The right candidate will be a capable science communicator, comfortable interacting in-person and online with diverse publics who have a wide variety of strongly-held values about Vermont's landscape and wildlife. This is a hybrid position with in-office and remote work, weekly. 


1. Leads planning, content development, and management of the department's social media channels. 
2. Assists and supports development and implementation of communications campaigns on topics including outdoor recreation, conservation initiatives, and fund development.
3. Provides graphic design and publication layout skills to support outreach efforts across the department, including generating interpretive signs, brochures, posters, reports, and other media.
4. Contributes to digital marketing strategy development and implementation, including email database management.
5. Represents the department and supports event outreach as needed, which may include nights and weekends, such as environmental education workshops and trade events.

It is a Limited Service position, which is non-tenured and authorized for a specific period of time. Limited Service positions are established for specially funded projects or programs.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in an office setting. Incumbent must have available private transportation for completion of field assignments on a timely basis. Weekend and evening duty may be anticipated. Certain promotional activities, required convention attendance, etc. may require overnight stays away from home.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years or more of experience in communications, public or media relations, marketing, policy writing, or consumer education. 

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, advertising, English, or technical and business writing.
