Overview
The Drinking Water and Groundwater Protection Division is seeking an energetic and high functioning environmental analyst to join the Compliance Section of the Vermont Public Drinking Water Program. This position oversees the compliance and implementation of the chemical contaminant rules under the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations. At both the state and federal level, rule oversight includes the Phase II/V Rule, Radionuclides Rule, Arsenic rule, and regulation of PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), as well as additional chemical drinking water contaminants.
This position employs a broad range of responsibilities ranging from technical and detailed lab report review, monitoring incoming water quality data for drinking water treatment effectiveness, as well as detailed data tracking and evaluating compliance milestones. This is an independent, high-pressure position with a focus on public health protection. The applicant should be prepared to respond immediately and appropriately to data indicating an actual or potential public health risk. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate clear and effective communication of highly technical information, be adaptable, highly motivated and have an understanding of chemistry. This is a rule-heavy position, that requires the ability to read, understand, implement, train on, and eventually become the state expert on all things water quality and chemical monitoring compliance. Working with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook) as well as Adobe Acrobat is required.
Preference will be given to an applicant who writes well and has knowledge of federal and state safe drinking water regulations, experience working with multiple complex databases, knowledge of drinking water treatment processes, sampling and laboratory protocols, and public drinking water system operation.

Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree or higher in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field.
OR
Three (3) years or more of experience in an engineering, environmental, social science, data science, or natural resources field.
