Overview
The Military Department at the State of Vermont is seeking an armed civilian Force Protection Officer (FPO) supporting the Air National Guard Security Forces Squadron at the Burlington Air National Guard Base. This position is responsible for securing and safeguarding military aircraft, hangers and other specialized buildings, controlled areas, explosives, and ammunition against attack, sabotage, espionage, damage, or loss. The FPO will control the entry of military and civilian personnel, contractors, VIPs, and visitors to the Base, flight line, and other restricted areas. Additionally, the FPO will provide limited military law enforcement services and may work in a military 911 dispatch center. This position may work rotating shifts for 8 1/2 hours per day. Candidates should have experience in either the military, law enforcement, or security work and be able to work long periods alone including night hours and inclement weather.

It is a Limited Service position, which is non-tenured and authorized for a specific period of time. Limited Service positions are established for specially funded projects or programs.

Incumbents will be expected to work night and weekend shifts, safely operate around moving aircraft, work in restricted areas, be exposed to sensitive classified information, and be frequently alone in adverse weather conditions, all while wearing heavy equipment. Integrity, honesty, and tact are critical in dealing with VIPs, installation military and civilian employees, guests, and the general public. Some exposure to dangerous situations is occasionally encountered. Incumbents are expected to carry firearms. Must wear a uniform and body armor.
Minimum QualificationsHigh School diploma or equivalent AND two (2) or more years' experience in the security or law enforcement field OR successful completion of a military law enforcement/security technical school or police academy program OR successful completion of two (2) years full-time college coursework in a law enforcement/criminal Justice field.
Special Note: A current valid State driver's license is required.
A military driver's license and/or airfield flight line permit and SECRET security clearance must be obtained during the probationary period. Individual duty post certifications must be maintained through written, oral and practical testing and exercises.
An incumbent must also be able to lawfully possess and qualify with the appropriate firearms within the probationary period in accordance with either US Air Force or State of Vermont Military Department standards.
Special RequirementsThis is a State of Vermont civilian employee position. Enlistment in or eligibility for the Vermont National Guard is NOT required.
Incumbents of this job are issued a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC), which is issued only upon passing a federal background check (Tier 1) including a fingerprint-supported criminal record check. Candidates must obtain the CAC for successful completion of original probation. Possession of the CAC is a condition of employment.
