We are therefore seeking a driven reclamation professional to support our Wyoming team's commitment to enhancing the beauty and value of Wyoming's wildlands and both applying and contributing to the knowledge bank of reclamation and ecological restoration sciences. 

We currently have an opening for a full-time Ecologist based in Lander, Wyoming, a renowned rock-climbing destination located at the foot of Wyoming's spectacular Wind River Range and a three-hour drive to Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. 

This position requires extensive travel in remote areas of Wyoming and other states during the field season. The successful candidate will work closely with Principal and Project Scientists, Engineers, and Project Managers to advance reclamation and ecological restoration sciences by successfully executing existing ecological and soil conservation, restoration, and management projects. 

 

Your Role:

  • Qualitative/quantitative vegetation monitoring and data compilation, analysis, and interpretation.   
  • Ecological restoration, mitigation, and reclamation site reconnaissance.
  • Support of design, contracting, field oversight and reporting on ecological reclamation and restoration projects.
  • Assist senior staff with analysis, options evaluation, planning, permitting, design, construction oversight, and reporting.
  • Assisting senior staff with soil erosion and conservation, and channel and slope stability monitoring and data compilation, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Assist senior staff with physical, chemical, and environmental hazard recognition, assessment, and reporting.
  • Assist senior staff with environmental compliance and monitoring documents and report preparation.
  • Assist senior staff with noxious and invasive weed management analysis, planning, permitting, and weed control and eradication activity management, and reporting.
  • Coordination in support of native seed collection actions across the state of Wyoming.
  • Conduct sage grouse habitat evaluations and support of habitat enhancement design development.
  • Verbal and written communications and close collaboration with clients, colleagues, private landowners, construction contractors, private consultants, non-governmental and conservation agencies, regulatory authorities, and project stakeholders.   
  • The position will require travel and performance of physically demanding field work typically related to environmental monitoring and sampling, site reconnaissance and reclamation/construction oversight.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Restoration Ecology, Rangeland Ecology, Botany, Ecology, Soil Science, or related field. Master's degree a plus.
  • 0 - 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • A strong background or coursework and/or experience in either Rangeland Sciences, Biology, Ecology, Soil Science, Botany, and/or related fields with emphasis in field work or studies.
  • Attention to detail, ability to work independently, willingness to work as part of team, willingness to learn, assist peers as needed, the ability to stay positive and effective during long days in the field, and enjoys working outdoors.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, problem solving skills, and time management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong skills and proficiency with computer systems and Microsoft-based software, including MS Excel for data analysis and MS Word for report preparation.
  • Ability to key out plant species found in Wyoming -OR- have knowledge of plant taxonomy and soils in rangeland ecosystems.
  • Understanding of plant taxonomy and ecology, ecological restoration, reclamation, soil science and weed management.   
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas is a plus: familiarity with ArcGIS and/or its applications, drone image capture and route planning, site and geomorphic grading and earthworks design; cover designs and soil, plant and plant root interrelationships; surface water hydrology and channel and soil stabilization methods; light and heavy earthwork construction, seeding and seedbed preparation methods and equipment; mining methods; mine hazard closure; contract document and technical specification preparation; geology and geochemistry.
  •  Knowledge and/or experience with botanical and soil surveys and a variety of vegetation sampling techniques such as line intercept a plus.
  • Knowledge of wetland function and permitting a plus.
  • Experience with electronic field data collection devices and software (GPS units, handheld tablets, Avenza, and ESRI's Field Maps) a plus.
  • First Aid/CPR certification and Wilderness First Aid a plus.
  • Ability to travel and perform field work.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing up to 35lbs.
  • A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
