We are seeking a Mid-Level Archaeologist/Cultural Resources Specialist with 3-5 years of professional archaeological experience in the United States, preferably in the Mid-Atlantic or Southeast regions. The successful candidate will have experience with interaction with SHPO and be willing to travel for fieldwork. The role involves conducting archaeological monitoring, excavations, and surveys, performing historical research, writing reports, and more.

 

Location: Mid-Atlantic or Southeast Region (Willing to travel for fieldwork)

 

Your Role:

·         Conduct archaeological monitoring in accordance with established protocols.

·         Make rapid assessments of potential archaeological finds, excavate as appropriate, and identify cultural artifacts and features.

·         Systematically record field information and communicate effectively with construction staff and supervisors.

·         Perform historical research and archive reviews.

·         Write clear and concise reports and use digital tools such as field iPads or GPS units for capturing field data and notes.

·         Track project time and report expenses using a computer.

·         Perform excavation and survey tasks, including recording field observations on digital media.

·         Ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

·         Perform manual labor tasks such as excavation with shovels, screening, artifact recovery, and curation.

 

Qualifications:

·         Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.

·         3 to 5 years of professional archaeological experience in the U.S., with a preference for the Mid-Atlantic or Southeast regions.

·         Completion of archaeological field school training or equivalent.

·         Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) preferred.

·         Experience interacting with State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO).

·         Strong report writing skills with the ability to write clearly and concisely.

·         Proficient in using digital tools for data capture and communication.

·         Experience with excavation and survey tasks, including the use of digital media for recording observations.

·         Knowledge and experience performing work compliant with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

·         Ability to perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, standing, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 35 lbs.

·         Tolerance for working in various outdoor environments and weather conditions, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrains.

·         Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and supervisors.

·         A pre-employment drug screen in compliance with federal regulations is required, along with a physical if needed.

·         Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

 

Desired Skills and Experience:

·         Familiarity with Mid-Atlantic and/or Southeast archaeological practices.

·         Experience with historical research and archive reviews.

·         Ability to use computers for tracking project time and reporting expenses.

·         Experience with artifact recovery and curation processes.

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

·         Has ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 35 lbs. and have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.

·         Performs manual labor including excavation with shovels. 

·         Availability to work extended field rotations from5 to 10 days at a time.

 

Salary will be commensurate with experience.
