Position Summary:
The Project Engineer (Civil) plays a key role in the planning, design, and delivery of civil and infrastructure projects within a multidisciplinary consulting environment. This position supports project managers and senior engineers in executing projects from concept through construction, ensuring that technical, financial, and schedule objectives are met. The Project Engineer is responsible for coordinating design tasks, conducting analyses, preparing engineering drawings and specifications, and assisting in client communications and project documentation.
Working within an engineering consulting firm, the Project Engineer collaborates closely with internal teams, subconsultants, and clients to provide innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective engineering solutions. The role requires a solid understanding of civil engineering principles and practices, including site development, grading and drainage, utilities, roadway and transportation systems, and water resources.
Essential Job Functions:
The following duties are considered essential to the role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions:
- Perform detailed civil design for residential, commercial, and industrial site development projects, including grading, drainage, roadway alignment, and utility layouts. Prepare engineering drawings, technical reports, and construction documents in accordance with project requirements and applicable standards.
- Support land development and site improvement projects by conducting site feasibility analyses, preparing conceptual site layouts, and developing grading and drainage plans that balance project goals, environmental considerations, and regulatory compliance.
- Design and coordinate on-site and off-site improvements for water, wastewater, and stormwater systems. Develop calculations, cost estimates, and design documentation to support permit applications and construction packages.
- Integrate sustainable design principles and climate adaptation strategies into projects, including green infrastructure, low-impact development (LID), stormwater quality improvements, and resiliency measures.
- Provide construction-phase support, including review of submittals and RFIs, coordination with contractors, and field observation to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and quality standards.
- Collaborate closely with other technical disciplines—including environmental scientists, structural engineers, planners, and surveyors—to deliver integrated solutions across all project phases from feasibility studies to permitting, final design, and construction support.
- Conduct work in accordance with company procedures, applicable legislation, and industry standards. Ensure deliverables meet internal quality control requirements and client expectations.
- Pursue continuous professional development, staying current with evolving civil engineering practices, design tools, codes, and sustainability trends. Maintain active involvement in professional organizations and training programs as appropriate.
- Adhere to and promote company health and safety policies. Work in a safe manner at all times and promptly report any safety incidents or concerns.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required to support project success and team objectives.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with 5-10 years of experience.
- Site design experience includes site grading, stormwater and utility design.
- Strong AutoCAD, Civil 3D skills and experience with HydroCAD and StormCAD.
- Ability to meet quality standards and deadlines.
- Active and clear driver's license, including a successful clearance of a Motor Vehicle history check.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional Registration preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods while performing computer-based tasks, attending meetings, or preparing design documentation.
- Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate computers, printers, and other office equipment.
- Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, specifications, and computer screens for extended periods.
- Ability to clearly communicate through speech, hearing, and written correspondence in person, virtually, and via telephone.
- Ability to travel to and from project sites, client meetings, and other offices as required.
- Physical capability to walk, stand, climb stairs or ladders, and navigate uneven terrain, active construction sites, and partially completed structures.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials, drawings, or equipment weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.
- Capacity to use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, vests, and steel-toed boots when required.
- Tolerance for varying environmental conditions, including exposure to weather, noise, and dust during site visits.
Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
- Work is performed in a professional office environment involving extensive use of computers, design software, and standard office equipment. The role requires regular interaction with project managers, engineers, planners, and clients in a collaborative, team-oriented atmosphere.
- Work involves extensive use of computers, digital communication tools, and design software in an open or hybrid office environment.
- Occasional travel may be required to project sites, client offices, or other company locations. Travel is typically within the region but may include short-term assignments outside the immediate area as projects demand.
- Site visits and fieldwork are required to perform inspections, collect data, observe construction activities, and verify design implementation. Field conditions may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, active construction zones, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Work at project sites may involve exposure to active construction environments, including noise, dust, varying temperatures, and weather conditions.
- The position requires adaptability to shifting project priorities, client expectations, and multidisciplinary coordination.
