Summary of Job Duties: The Biostatistician II helps facilitate the Biostatistics Department's efforts to enhance the quality of research conducted at UAMS by providing expert statistical guidance to UAMS investigators. With minimal guidance of Biostatistics Faculty or advanced research staff, the Biostatistician II commonly assists investigators with protocol and grant development; data preparation; introductory to intermediate-level data analysis and statistical programming using specialized software such as SAS, R or SPSS; and assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts, presentation materials and grant application materials, with scholarly contributions appropriately recognized. The Biostatistician II may also assist faculty in meeting the educational goals of the department.

The Biostatistician II will work with investigators throughout the UAMS campuses, generally in partnership with Department faculty members and/or more senior research staff, with an increased level of independence based on experience. Research areas may include clinical, basic, and/or population health sciences. The Biostatistician II will also maintain a close relationship with informaticists, database managers, and research administrators involved with specific studies.
Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Biostatistics or related field PLUS (3) three years of post-degree work

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expertise in a statistical programming language, preferably SAS and/or R. 

Preferred Qualifications or Competencies

  • Master's Degree Statistics, Biostatistics or related field PLUS nine (9) years of experience (post-degree) in conducting inferential statistical analysis.
  • Experience in writing statistical methods and results sections in reports, manuscripts, or grant applications.

Responsibilities:

Protocol/Grant Development

  • Assists investigators to develop experimental designs that best address the research question, develops data analysis plans for each specific aim of the study, provides and justifies sample size estimates for the study, and provides appropriate subject allocation plans.
  • Accesses relevant literature to understand the context of the research question.
  • Attends project meetings with investigators, along with Biostatistics faculty or senior staff. Increasing level of independence as warranted by experience and requirements of the project.

Data Analysis

  • Performs  intermediate level data analyses of research data with increased level of independence as warranted by experience and requirements of the project. 
  • Applies appropriate statistical methods and skilled programming skills as needed.
  • Accesses relevant literature to understand the context of the research question. 
  • Provides written reports to investigators explaining the statistical methodology and presenting and interpreting the results. 
  • Expertise in a statistical programming language is required, along with a working understanding of databases.

Educational Activities

  • Participates in the education activities of the Department as requested.  This may involve assisting with courses given through the Graduate School and the College of Public Health by means of occasional lectures, preparation and/or grading of assignments and exams, and holding office hours or help sessions.  In addition, the Senior Biostatistician will also be asked to provide one-time lectures to COM/COPH faculty and staff and/or to participate in research journal clubs of other departments.

Manuscript & Presentation Preparation

  • Assists investigators in writing manuscripts of completed research and in preparing presentation/poster materials for research conferences.  This includes writing sections of the manuscript that clearly and accurately describe the statistical methods used to analyze the data, providing publication quality tables and graphics and assisting in writing/editing the results section of a manuscript.  

Administration

  • Responsible for performing other duties, as assigned.
