Summary of Job Duties: The Dental Assistant provides support to dental faculty, dental students, and dental residents of the UAMS Oral Health Clinic. The Dental Assistant will organize and assist in the delivery of dental procedures in the Oral Health Clinic and UAMS operating rooms. The Oral Health Clinic is responsible for delivering comprehensive dental care and for assisting in the promotion of dental education at UAMS and throughout the State of Arkansas. The clinic will serve as a pathway to student and resident education for dental assisting, dental hygiene, and dentalstudents as well as advanced education dental residents. This position functions in a primary support role toward the general operations and maintenance of the clinic. This position will be instrumental in the achievement of the overall goals of the Center for Dental Education by supporting and coordinating the tasks necessary to the provision of stellar dental services to the patients of the Oral Health Clinic
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Candidate must have completed a dental assisting training program. Candidate must meet the training qualifications in order to be considered and are advised to contact the training facility/source to verify accreditation status.
  • Must be trained in four-handed dentistry; Must possess thorough working knowledge of Current Dental Terminology (CDT) codes; OSHA regulations; and the Arkansas Dental Practice Act.
  • One year minimum experience preferred as a registered dental assistant required if trained at CODA-accredited entity; Five years minimum experience preferred if trained or made license eligible through a non-CODA accredited entity. Must be currently licensed/certified in the State of Arkansas as a registered dental assistant; must possess permit for the following expanded functions: 1) radiography, 2) coronal polishing, and 3) nitrous oxide administration.


Additional Information:

Patient Care

  • Organizes and assist dentists, dental students, dental hygienists, and residents in the delivery of dental procedures in Oral Health Clinic and UAMS operating rooms;
  • Guides patients through dental processes prior to treatment, educate patients in oral hygiene instruction, and provide postoperative instructions;
  • Performs assessments that include obtaining and reviewing patient health histories and taking/recording blood pressure and other vital signs;
  • Performs appropriate dental charting and treatment documentation in the electronic record;
  • Exposes and process dental radiographs of diagnostic quality;
  • Administers nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia and monitor sedation cases;
  • Performs coronal polishing;
  • Takes alginate impressions, pour, and trim models;
  • Fabricates night guards, bleaching trays, splints, custom trays, and temporary crowns;
  • Prepares lab prescription forms, ship and receive lab cases, and maintain record of lab orders;
  • Performs in-office whitening.


Inventory and Clinic Maintenance

  • Performs daily and routine maintenance of dental equipment as assigned;
  • Cleans and sterilize dental instruments, supplies, and dental assist units and maintain organization and supply of sterilization area;
  • Establishes and maintain an organized, efficient, cost-effective inventory control system, continually monitoring supply levels and re-ordering by working with assigned purchaser ;
  • Maintains stock of daily supplies in all clinic rooms


Administrative

  • Reviews daily schedules and resolve conflicts as necessary;
  • Performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties (answer telephones, make appointments, explain and receive payment for procedures, and other duties as assigned);
  • Assists with front desk/business administration duties as assigned.
