Job Summary

Under supervision of the Large Animal Clinic Managers, provide restraint to Equine patients with in the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital Large Animal Clinic. Provide restraint on Equine patients during exams and advanced imaging and farrier appointments.

 

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

 

 

THIS POSITION ENDS 10 MONTHS FROM DATE OF HIRE WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSION AND/OR BECOMING CAREER.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Work & stand 8-10 hours/day, moving about constantly, often at a fast pace & with an unpredictable heavy work load.
• Move quickly working with fractious or violent horses.
• Must be familiar and comfortable working with large domestic animals.
• Computer work, typing, filing.
• Ascending/descending stairs/ladders.
• Kneel, squat, and lift up to 70 lbs. (routinely lift bales of hay/shavings).
• Use scrub brushes, shovels, pitchforks, & brooms to remove material from stalls &place into dumpster.
• Perform physical labor for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Work week may include weekdays, weekends & holidays. Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

• May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers, shoe covers, & cap.

• Requires working with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gaseous anesthetics, zoonotic and infectious diseases, unpleasant odors and distraught clients.

• Regular exposure to dead animals & bodily tissue.

• Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

 

• Experience restraining horses (all sizes and breeds of Equine patients) in a hospitalization setting including high strung/ fractious horse.

• Experience with farm animal husbandry and behavior sufficient to recognize a stable animal from an animal in distress.

 

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

• Oral & written communication & interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse group of people: clients, clinicians, students, & staff and understand and follow verbal and written instructions in regard to basic care of large animals.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

• Knowledge of computer use sufficient to read and send emails.

• Knowledge of zoonotic diseases in farm animals.
