Departmental Overview
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 200 staff members and coaches and sponsors 29 varsity sports programs. These 29 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). We are currently seeking a Director of Academic Development for our Men's Basketball Team. This is a contract position, not a temporary position. The original contract term will be one year, but will be up for renewal based upon performance.

Responsibilities
This position will serve as a learning specialist for the academic development and success of our football student-athletes. She/he/they will provide general oversight, support and direction of the academic preparation and performance of all team members and will collaborate with the ASC Director, Football Academic Advisor and Learning Specialists from the Athletic Study Center who provide advising services to the football program.
- Oversees and provides necessary support to the football team, such as progress towards degree monitoring, tutorial services, study hall, exam preparation, writing skills, etc.
- Collaborates with Academic Advisor on course selection, and the determination of a designated major, based upon each student's academic goals, strengths and weaknesses. Reviews alternative academic options, scheduling conflict resolution, and miscellaneous academic related issues.
- Serves as liaison between Student Services staff on development and delivery of career development and life skills programming.
- Identifies individual student needs for appropriate programs and services and develops services to enhance study skills, such as reading, writing, test and note taking.
- Collaborates with appropriate mental health service providers (Sports Medicine and Tang Center) to develop and deliver performance lifestyle and other programming to student-athletes, pertinent to their academic success.
- Communicates and works with football coaching staff to keep them informed and involved with the academic and degree progress of their student-athletes. Advises and updates coaches regarding any concerns of truancy, misconduct, or lack of motivation of any football student-athletes. Recommends solutions and interventions as necessary.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated current knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, particularly those related to academic support and integrity.
- Knowledge of learning theory and its practical application in competitive settings.
- Knowledge of teaching and learning techniques and strategies.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
- Ability to multi-task.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related field.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $115,000 - $125,000.
- This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), 1 year contract position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
- This position is exempt and paid monthly.
