Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Supervisor and in collaboration with the G.V. Ling Urinary Stone Analysis Laboratory (USAL) Director, provide diagnostic analysis of the mineral composition of uroliths based on highly specified methodologies for patient care purposes. Maintain laboratory records of stone analyses and provide analytical reports to attending veterinarians for diagnostic purposes. Maintain clinical and research records in the VMACS record keeping system. Maintain supplies and equipment. Comply with regulatory agencies, UCD, and VMTH protocols and policies.

 

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

Minimum Education/Experience:

 

  • Experience in quantitative crystallographic analysis of the mineral composition of urinary calculi

 

  • Experience with oil immersion method of optical crystallography using polarized light microscope and infrared spectroscopy to identify mineral patterns.

 

  • Experience with scanning electron microscopy using backscattered electron imaging, qualitative and quantitative electron probe microanalysis including sample preparation, and interpreting microprobe analysis data.

 

  • Experience in troubleshooting analytical procedures utilizing the methodologies and equipment listed above.

 

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Knowledge of x-ray diffractometry, sample preparation and computer search program used to match the x-ray diffraction pattern of the layers of the unknown calculus specimen with the x-ray diffraction patterns of minerals of known composition.

 

  • Skill to organize and prioritize the workload of the research projects and diagnostic analyses.

 

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, as well as strong communication and interpersonal skills

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

 

  • Good oral and written skills including good interpersonal and oral communication as well as the ability to assist researchers, students, clinicians, and clients.

 

  • Skill to maintain a complete and accurate experimental log/laboratory notebook.

 

  • Skill to train and monitor other laboratory personnel in research and diagnostic laboratory techniques including all SOP's and proper operation of various equipment.

 

  • Ability to understand and complete the required EH&S safety training courses: Biological Safety & Medical Waste Management, Chemical Laboratory Safety, and Hazardous Waste Management & Minimization, and the radiation safety course.
