Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $67,800- $122,800.  The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,200- 88,000.


Job Closing Date

This position is a 4-year contract and is eligible for full UC benefits.

About the Job

Working directly with faculty and senior staff, the incumbent will be responsible for the development, maintenance, and management of the instructional laboratory needs for the School of Engineering, with ultimate responsibility for laboratory support in Electrical Engineering and Electronics related courses. Handle the day-today operations of the SOE laboratories and field classes with primary duties including lab equipment setup and teaching safety and the proper use of equipment to students and faculty. Responsible for the maintenance of equipment inventory and repairs as needed and coordination of laboratory availability for associated courses with the Academic Support Manager in the School of Engineering. Assisting Faculty and staff in making sure that their work and research areas are in compliance with federal and state regulations concerning health and safety and risk management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for identifying engineering fundamentals and electrical engineering, teaching laboratory equipment needs and specifications, selecting the most appropriate equipment from suppliers, and determining installation needs and requirements. Independently set up, test, and maintain all associated laboratory equipment. Prepare engineering specifications and plans, fabricate, assemble, test, and maintain novel engineering teaching laboratory and field equipment. 
  • Design, document, test, troubleshoot and modify as needed, experiments for electrical engineering and electronics teaching laboratories and field classes. Oversight and laboratory safety and establish protocols for proper use, including procedures and documentation related to safety training. 
  • Develop safety protocols for electrical engineering and electronics labs. Coordinate with appropriate Campus offices to ensure proper compliance with associated University policies and procedures. 
  • Maintain general laboratory equipment supplies and the inventory of consumable supplies. Preparation of all purchasing documentation related to the needs of the Engineering Fundamentals and Electrical Engineering Laboratories and Field classes. Preparation of written documentation in support of contractual agreements, sole or single source vendor requests, credit requests, and independent consultant or contractor agreements. Provide guidance and oversight to ensure all necessary forms are completed and appropriately recorded while maintaining adherence to the University policies and procedures. Provide documentation and support as needed for the ABET/WASC accreditation process. 
  • Assist in the development of the new labs for the new Electrical Engineering program. Provide support to Electrical Engineering faculty during the development and implementation of the new EE teaching labs. Develop the TA training material for the new EE labs. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in Electrical Engineering or closely related discipline, or equivalent experience/training. (Required)
  • Advanced degree M.S. degree in an Engineering discipline; preferably Electrical Engineering or closely related discipline. (Preferred)
  • One year of directly related, progressively responsible experience in teaching labs setup, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. (Required)

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge of Electrical Engineering principles and methods to independently design and setup teaching labs. 
  • Basic knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint. 
  • Demonstrated independent organizational and project management skills including the ability to coordinate and prioritize a diverse workload, set and meet competing deadlines and establish systems to effectively manage projects and other information. 
  • Ability to read, understand, interpret and apply policies and procedures. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required, including use of proper grammar, punctuation, spelling and standard business formats. 
  • Ability to act independently and follow through on assignments. 
  • Ability to independently resolve problems. 
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills. 
  • Familiarity with OSHA standard related to high voltage and high current applications. (Preferred)
