Job Summary

This Pharmacist 2 position for the Specialty Pharmacy Hub is expected to provide patient care in a variety of clinical areas for Specialty Pharmacy to support patients in receiving appropriate outpatient and specialty pharmacy medications. This position is responsible for screening prescriptions for appropriateness and making interventions, preparing medications for dispensing, distribution activities, providing immunizations and providing patient consultations. Other duties may include providing drug information and recommendations, assisting with insurance/prior authorization needs, supporting drug dispensing and distribution activities, compounding activities, maintaining pharmacy robotics, inventory management, prescription billing, processing payments for prescriptions, providing medication consultations, providing immunizations, serving as a preceptor to pharmacy students and residents, and providing training to other personnel. This position fosters excellent interdepartmental relationships and provides quality and cost-effective pharmaceutical care to all patients.

As a part of the outpatient pharmacy service line, Specialty Pharmacy staff are responsible for appropriate prescription billing to multiple payers including third party insurances, Medicaid, Medicare D and Medicare B plans. Our pharmacies maintain compliance with multiple accrediting bodies and with State and Federal Laws and Regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

For full consideration applicants are encouraged to upload license and certification if required of the position. 

  • California Pharmacist License eligible and possess a valid license at the time of hire
  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice or Specialty residency, or minimum of 3 years of relevant clinical experience
  • Recent outpatient/specialty pharmacy or ambulatory clinical pharmacist work experience
  • Excellent ability to effectively communicate with and educate/counsel patients about their medication therapy.
  • Clinical pharmacist experience including familiarity with medical terminology, lab data and optimal drug therapy.
  • Computer skills that facilitate clinical patient data or medication order entry, chart documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR), and use of other software programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain needed information from a patient or patient's chart to create medication management plans.
  • Strong communication skills (written & oral) to clearly and concisely provide information with exceptional interpersonal skills to healthcare providers, clinic staff, and other members of a patient's care team.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify medication-related problems in patients, communicate them to a patient's physician and offer recommendations.
  • Recent working knowledge of prior authorization, appeals, and pharmacy benefit structure and formulary requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to triage and prioritize to provide patient care.
  • Familiar with physical assessments and the use of physical assessment monitors such as DM machines, asthma spacers/inhalers, BP monitors, coagucheck machines, etc.
  • Knowledge of current ambulatory care guidelines (i.e. NCEP, JNC, ADA).
  • Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP) or Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification
  • PGY-2 Pharmacy Practice or Specialty Residency
  • Prior experience developing or implementing a pharmacist collaborative practice agreement or new clinical pharmacist service
  • Prior experience precepting and evaluating residents and students
  • Ability to navigate third party reimbursement programs and resolve insurance issues

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.


The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.
