Full Salary Range: The full salary range for this position is $25.75 - $30.72/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Work Location: MSRB 1004

Working Days and Hours: M-F 9-5, variable hours and weekend hours required for field research

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under general supervision provide laboratory and field support for research studies on invertebrate and surf zone fish communities of sandy beach ecosystems.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Marine Ecology or related field.
  • 4-6 years Experience in and ability to perform quantitative ecological sampling of marine biota and accurately process biotic samples and videos in the laboratory 
  • 1-3 years Experience using statistical programs to generate datasets, produce data summaries and conduct analyses
  • Maintain a valid CA driver's license, a clean DMV record and enrollment in the DMV Employee Pull-Notice Program Upon Hire
  • University Research Diver Certified (AAUS) to 60 feet Upon Hire
  • Taxonomic knowledge of local marine flora and fauna and ability to identify fish, invertebrates and marine algae in the field and laboratory
  • Experience processing video and quantitative samples of marine biota in the laboratory.
  • Ability to accurately record and perform QA/QC on data from field observations, video and laboratory samples.
  • Ability to work in challenging weather conditions in exposed locations to perform field research duties
  • Experience in and ability to perform quantitative ecological sampling of marine biota. Experience conducting quantitative field surveys of biota of sandy beaches and surf zones.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to perform basic statistical analyses of community and population data and produce reports
  • Ability to clean and prepare datasets for upload to data archives

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

50% Field research surveys - Under general supervision conduct research field survey activities at the study sites including replicated surveys of surf zone fish and invertebrates on sandy beaches. Uses expertise to accurately identify and quantify fish and invertebrates in field conditions. Organizes field logistics, training in protocols, inventory, setup, packing and takedown of sampling gear Identify and measure biota and record data accurately in field conditions. Clean up, repair, pack and transport sampling gear.

50% Laboratory assignment - Under general supervision 1) conducts preliminary analysis of data from monitoring surveys and provides reports as needed 2) quantifies fish and invertebrates from underwater videos 3) quantifies and sorts invertebrates in samples from field surveys 4) uses experience and expertise to identify fish and invertebrate specimens to the lowest possible taxon and uses own judgement if needed, 5) oversees initial processing of samples from field surveys by student volunteers 6) compiles and coordinates field data entry, 7) conducts preliminary data analysis, 9) manages project data and performs quality assurance and quality control of data, 10) orders and purchases supplies, and 11) performs assorted tasks as needed
