Description

Job Summary

Work as part of a research team under the direction of the PI studying the population genomics of mosquito vectors of human and animal diseases. These include Anopheles gambiae s.l., the principal vector of human malaria in sub-Saharan Africa and the mosquito, Aedes aegypti, which is the vector of dengue and Zika viruses and is an invasive mosquito species recently established in the state of California. Duties include molecular laboratory work (DNA extractions, PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, NGS library preparation, MassArray multiplex assays, etc.) and basic laboratory maintenance such as re-stocking consumable lab supplies and cleaning re-useable supplies. The lab assistant will have the opportunity, if desired, to travel to field sites in São Tomé & Príncipe (west Africa) and, possibly, other sites in Africa to assist with Anopheles mosquito collections, processing, extraction, and laboratory setup.

Qualifications 

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in biological sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience and basic computing skills with knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience (through employment or coursework) with DNA analytical methods (e.g. extraction, PCR, electrophoresis, sequencing)
  • Mathematical skills and knowledge to perform routine laboratory calculations for molecular biology applications.
  • Solid understanding of basic genetics and molecular biology.
  • Strong organizational skills and excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work with others in a collegial team environment.
  • Skills to follow detailed instructions on the conduct of laboratory protocols and understanding of the importance laboratory cleanliness and contamination prevention.
  • Willingness to adapt to a rapidly changing work environment and respond to unforeseen challenges and delays while remaining productive.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and/or experience with entomology or related organismal biology.
  • Background in population genetics, genomics and/or bioinformatics.
  • Computer programming skills.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment including autoclave, PCR machines, laboratory freezers, etc.

Physical Demands
