The Student Transition Programs (STP) department at The University of Texas at Dallas is excited to welcome an Assistant Director of Freshman and Family Programs to the team!

The Role
The Assistant Director oversees Freshman and Family Programming, including Freshman Orientation, Comet Camp, Comet Families initiatives (Family Day and the Comet Family Experience), Commuter Student Programming (Road Warriors mentorship), and First-Year Experience programs. This role advances the University's mission by leading services and activities that promote student development, engagement, and belonging. Additionally, the Assistant Director supports parent and family engagement, manages office operations, and oversees budgets, communications, marketing, and event execution for key annual programs.

The Department
STP supports Freshman Orientation, Transfer Orientation, Transfer Student Services, Commuter Student Programs, Comet Families, Comet Camp, Transition Programming (Sophomore Year Experience, Junior Year Experience, and Senior Year Experience), and the UTD App.

Mission of STP
In support of the mission of The University of Texas at Dallas and the Division of Student Affairs, Student Transition Programs facilitates the transition of new students and their families into the institution and provides programs, services, and involvement opportunities specific to first-year students, transfer students, commuter students, the families of students, sophomores, juniors, and seniors as they evolve throughout their education. Through a welcoming atmosphere, we provide the framework for students to learn and develop as they adjust to the expectations, standards, and academic rigors of the university while fostering pride in the UT Dallas community.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree; Three years' experience in the specific functional area, supervisory experience; knowledge of student development theory; knowledge of residential programs, service learning programs, new student, orientation or other student life functional areas. Ability to work and manage collaboratively; experience with budget preparation & management; advanced written & oral communication skills; innovation & creativity.



Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Student Development, Counseling, or related discipline.
  • Experience with orientation and/or other student life functional areas.
  • 2-4 years of demonstrated success advising college students, developing student leaders, and advising students.
  • Demonstrated success in large-scale event planning and management.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, and the ability to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to demonstrate awareness of marketing initiatives or event promotion strategies.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated customer service, conflict-resolution, and facilitation techniques.
  • Proven ability to make independent decisions aligned with departmental and university missions.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include, but not limited to-

  • Assist in the development and coordination of a comprehensive freshman and family orientation program and related initiatives.
  • Facilitate the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of the Coordinator of Freshman & Family Programs.
  • Lead efforts in the supervision, recruitment, selection, and training of student employees and interns.
  • Serves as the main contact for families seeking information, guidance, and resources so they can appropriately support their student throughout the UTD experience.
  • Designs programs and services to equip families with skills and resources to support their student (i.e. Family Orientation activities, Campus ESP and related trainings, etc.).
  • Oversee and manage content and trainings for CampusESP, a platform used to communicate with over 20,000 UTD family members.
  • Collaborate with the Director to strategize, implement, and review program fund expenditures.
  • Conduct educational and leadership development programs for students, including the Orientation Leadership Program.
  • Develop and manage promotional and marketing strategies, including social media and website content.
  • Manage various logistical tasks such as payment reports, shared inboxes, phone lines, complaint logs, activity reports, and other departmental platforms.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with student affairs, academic departments, student organizations, and external higher education or professional organizations.
  • Contribute to unit-wide initiatives, including assessment, student leader development, recognition, and morale-building efforts.
  • Support planning and implementation of unit programs such as Transfer & Transition initiatives, student projects, departmental events, and team procedures.
  • Co-Chair the Orientation Advisory Committee.
  • Serve on University committees and perform other duties as assigned.
